Just finding more strangers to hangout with

In two weeks, the four of us were supposed to be leaving for Hawaii. 24 years ago, Harmony and I were randomly placed as college roommates at an internship in Washington, DC. This week, our daughters (due on the same day, born two days apart) wrap up their first year as college roommates. Instead of Hawaii, my dearest friend Harmony begins chemo tomorrow in preparation for a bone marrow transplant, as she faces Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) with MECOM rearrangement.

Last week I flew to Utah and Harmony requested that I take her and Devyn’s pictures. We only had 30 minutes of sunlight and were surrounded by suburbia but I found a baseball field with beautiful trees in the outfield. We recreated so many photos I have taken over the years, and as I hugged her the energy between us can’t be described as anything but electric. Everything—past and future—felt intensely present.

I wanted to keep this close to my heart to protect the pain. But sharing it also shares the love. Harmony has faced this diagnosis with incredible strength, and when her GoFundMe went live, the outpouring of support brought overwhelming emotion. She told me she has never felt so loved—and that is a powerful silver lining.

Harmony has a rare gift for building and maintaining deep connections. Helping organize this has made me realize she may be one of the most genuinely loved people I know.
