Spent the day at the Strategic Youth Congress by @dgapev at the Italian Embassy in Berlin 🇮🇹🇩🇪

My three sessions:
🌏 Chips, cables & code: Europe’s tech diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific
⏳ „Time as currency“: Europe’s GeoTech dilemma
⚖️ Tech diplomacy: Europe’s dependencies and room to manoeuvre

My takeaway: tech policy is security policy. Europe needs to start acting like it 🇪🇺 !

Just moments before our German Council on Foreign Relations (@dgapev) officially inaugurated its new India Center today! An exceptionally meaningful launch, distinguished by the presence and active participation of Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, @katherinareiche.cdu, as well as India's Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, @piyushgoyalofficial

As the #EU and #India, two of the world's largest democratic economic powerhouses, stand on the cusp of finalising a historic Free Trade Agreement, the strategic necessity for deeper institutional, economic / entrepreneurial, technological, and academic bridges has never been more vital. Thus, my warmest congratulations to our inaugural "Head of India", Leo Wigger, and our Co-Directors Dr. @kiravirginia and Dr. Patrick Keller, for their vision and leadership in establishing this new center!

A personal and intellectual highlight of the launch was hearing Minister Goyal articulate the striking conceptual alignment between traditional Indian business ethics and the traditional German archetype of the "Honourable Merchant" (Ehrbarer Kaufmann); this specific intersection of values resonates deeply with my own perspective recently published for the Free and Hanseatic City of @hamburg.representation.mumbai, which focuses (in an essayistic manner) on the structural role of #Zoroastrianism's business #ethics between these ecosystems. Emerging out of Mumbai, which is also the hometown of the Minister, this specific ethos historically catalyzed and continues to impact India's most iconic Parsi conglomerates and philanthropic trusts (many of whom are active in Germany / Europe, and have been for a long time!), which must be seen as further evidence that values-driven entrepreneurship is not a modern Western invention, but a foundational, cross-cultural reality.

I believe that today's geopolitical convergence also requires exactly this: mutual recognition of shared ethical frameworks! Thus, our new DGAP Centre on India couldn't have been initiated at a better and more urgent time ...

🇩🇪🤝🇮🇹 Can Germany and Italy turn their economic strengths into greater European competitiveness?
Both countries have a strong industrial base, excellent research and innovative companies but also face similar challenges in a changing global economy.

At the third “Renaissance of the German-Italian Economic Dialogue” at Villa Vigoni, representatives from business, academia and politics explored how closer cooperation can make a difference:
🔬 bringing research and industry closer together
💡 turning innovation into scalable businesses and technologies
💶 connecting ideas and capital
🏭 strengthening Europe’s industrial competitiveness
🇪🇺 making better use of the European Single Market

Stronger bilateral cooperation can become a driver for European competitiveness, resilience and innovation.

Thanks to our co-organisers, the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation, Barbara Frenz and Marc Beise, and to everyone who joined the exchange! 🙌

Almost five years into the full-scale invasion, Russian classrooms teach "traditional values" alongside war propaganda, and universities are drawn into military recruitment.

Academics, teachers, and students who resist these trends face surveillance, politically motivated prosecution, and isolation from European institutions.

On 7 October in Berlin, we present the findings, and open the floor to discuss what Europe can do.

Join us for the presentation, followed by a panel discussion on the implications for academia and education in Russia, its neighboring countries, and Europe, and on what can be done, from European strategies to supporting independent Russian academics inside the country and in exile.
