This splendid Victorian building is called Strathmore Lodge. It's in Ward Road, Dundee, and it's been a Salvation Army Hostel for well over a hundred years since 1900. The building, complete with gothic tower, dates back to 1855. It was built as a 'Ragged School' for poor and destitute children. The foundation stone was laid by Dundee's Member of Parliament, George Duncan. In 1856 the building was cerified for use as a reformatory. In 1861 it was reassigned as an industrial school for children who were committed by magistrates to a period of detention. In 1861 there were 101 children resident there (62 boys and 39 girls). There was a scandal in 1863 when the superintendent, Alexander Small, was sentenced to four years penal servitude for embezzling the school's funds over a ten year period. This resulted in a reduction of children placed at the school by magistrates. An inspection in 1872 noted that the boys were employed in wood chopping, hair teasing (whatever that is!) and sack making. The girls did the cooking and washing, knitted the stockings, made the shirts and repaired the clothing. In 1878 the boys were moved to another site with the Ward Road building continuing for girls only. In 1890 81 girls were detained there with another three there on a voluntary basis. In 1896 the girls were moved to another site. For four years the building was used as a hostel for women who worked in Dundee's jute mills. Then it was taken over by the Salvation Army, who continue to this day to run it as a hostel for homeless people. Many thanks to my IG friend, @dherlin, for identifying this building for me! Otherwise I would not have been able to research its history. #strathmorelodge #salvationarmy #hostels #homeslessness #raggedschools #industrialschools #dundee #scotland #scotlandlover #scotlandsbeauty #scotlandgreatshots #all_shots #beauty #style #love #webstagram #tweegram #instagram #instalike #instalove #instago #instafun
