synthesis INTERVIEWS: A series of interviews with avant-garde VR artists who have helped establish VR as an artistic medium and meaningfully contributed to the art scene.

For the third act of the series we sat with Tamiko Thiel.
.
• How did you begin with VR/AR?
.
In 1994 VR ran for the first time on PCs instead of expensive workstations, and I used it as creative director/producer of Starbright World, the first online 3D virtual world for children, in collaboration with Steven Spielberg. I then used this technology to make several artworks of my own: showing in Berlin from 20-24 Nov. in CLB Berlin/Aufbau-Haus is Virtuelle Mauer/ReConstructing the Wall (2008, with Teresa Reuter). It can run on a VR headset but we prefer showing it as an interactive large screen projection: you can explore a km of the Berlin Wall with a group of friends, and without getting VR sickness! I began AR with ARt Critic Face Matrix, in the pathbreaking 2010 intervention at MoMA NY organized by Skwarek and Veenhof. I then led our intervention into the 2011 Venice Biennial. These events entered media art history as the beginnings of mobile AR art.
.
• Why are large institutions reluctant to show VR?
.
VR requires expensive technical and personnel support, can only be viewed by a one person at a time and makes some users nauseous! Also few art schools teach media art history - but as digital natives move into positions of power they will want to include it.
.
• Your Connection Machine was acquired by MoMA NY. Did it change the way people view computers?
.
When the machine came out in 1986 Steve Jobs told his "right hand," Joanna Hoffman, to get its designer to create his NeXT PC. She said, "Sorry, Tamiko has gone to Europe to be an artist!" But its influence on the visual design of all his products–and on AI through Google co-founder Sergey Brin, who learned parallel programming on a Connection Machine – was enormous.
.
• Any new projects?
.
I am working on Markiewicz+Piron‘s My Identity is this Expanse, and on a new work for DiMoDa.

synthesis INTERVIEWS: A series of interviews with avant-garde VR artists who have helped establishing VR as artistic medium and meaningfully contributed to the art scene.

PART I: Alfredo Salazar-Caro
.
- What is one VR artwork that you particularly appreciate? Why is it so important to you?
.
I have not seen a lot of VR works that I am impressed with or inspired by. In fact, I have found more works that I find immature, repetitive, incomplete and in some cases even offensive. We are at a very exciting intersection and we all need a little more time incubating before some exciting and transformative works begin to emerge.
.
- Tell us about your creative process concerning VR.
.
My process is the same for any other artwork. I live my life and learn about the world and reflect that. I sketch and write a lot. I come from an installation and sculpture background, so in a way VR is allowing me to fulfil all the fantasies that were limited by physical reality, but the process of reaching these fantasies has remained the same.
.
- How do you deal with the issue of archiving and preserving the artwork?
.
Archiving VR is an ongoing issue. I worked on archiving VR for a major museum in NYC and the way we went about it is to make a 360 version of it, that can be easily archived as a video. I think this is a nice way to keep a simple archive but of course it gets much more complicated than that. My role is to be an artist and I am more than happy to let the archivists break their brains on this one.
.
- What are you currently working on?
.
I just premiered the first chapter of Dreams of the Jaguar's Daughter at Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Dreams of the Jaguar's Daughter is a three-part Surreal VR Documentary where Achik', the spirit of a young Mayan immigrant, guides viewers through her dreams and memories of the arduous journey north. Starting in the Guatemalan jungle, traveling through central Mexico and reaching the Arizona Desert. Each chapter is composed from documentation of immigrants' journeys during the 2018 Caravan, using 3D scans, drones, traditional footage, interviews and 360 footage. I am currently working on Chapters 2 and 3 of this saga.

Eeeeeeee! 😮💃🎉 Super excited to finally get to announce this. I teamed up with @float.land and @onwevr for SIM-CINEMA, a pop-up immersive art installation 4/26-28 at Wevr in Venice, CA.

The title (full: "simulation cinema") is a reference to EXPANDED CINEMA. We wanted to showcase artists who were pushing the idea of "cinema" in compelling directions -- be they immersive, interactive, algorithmic, or otherwise.

Wevr is home to one of 3 Holodomes in the world, and FLOAT has been working with incredible artists over the past year to produce interactive content for shared immersive art experiences.
Beyond that, we'll feature cutting-edge video art, AR, and VR, including the debut of @di_mo_da 3.0.

I'm biased, but seriously: don't miss this. 🙏
