ARCTIC ALCHEMY will stream July 23-26 as part of our free virtual screening Shorts: Trailblazers!

The new film directed by Colin Arisman & Zeppelin Zeerip follows renowned Alaskan adventurer and climate scientist Roman Dial and his team on a 112-mile research expedition above the Arctic Circle. Traveling by packraft and foot through Alaska’s mighty Brooks Range, their goal is to find the source of a mysterious phenomenon poisoning watersheds in the Arctic. Along the journey, Roman reckons with fatherhood, personal tragedy, and the power of wilderness to both break us and bring us fully alive.

How do you scan moving water like an expert? Reading river levels and flow, scouting rapids from upstream, and understanding what the current is telling you are all learnable skills.

Be WaterWise #19 – Read It covers the hazards that catch paddlers off guard: strainers and fallen trees, rocks that flip boats, hydraulics, cold water risk, and how fast a calm river can change when dam releases or flash floods hit. It also covers how to use river features to your advantage, and why misreading them is just as risky as missing them entirely.

The ability to spot hazards before you reach them is what separates a good day on the water from a bad one.

A lot to unpack with this load hauler of a custom pack. It’s for Alex @packraftmaine . He needed a pack that could easily cary drybags, pack rafts and paddles, and store inside of the boat.

The bottom roll top compartment is for his personal gear, about 30L. This is sewn onto the back sheet. Has load stabilizer straps and compression straps that can plug into the frame sheet high or low. The front pocket uses aluminum g hooks to hook onto the front edge of the packbag. Then it plugs into the sides and can help contain the load. It is fully removable. Front, draining, slot for paddle blades. Full vertical and horizontal daisy chains sewn on the back side, with two layers of ultra 400 tx so they cannot tear out over time with big loads.

The harness is fully framed. The mesh covered back pad Velcro’s off and is sewn to easily fold in half for stowage. The stays are 30” long 7075-t6 aluminum. Full conical hip belt( removable) and 3” curved shoulder straps.

Built in all ultra 400 tx with 800 bottom. Roll top is Dyneema grid 400 D pack cloth.

While built with pack rafting in mind, it can easily carry any big, bulky load, irregardless of the weight. It can be used for carrying a smaller pack for remote climbs. Carrying game , firewood, propane …. You get it. Or maybe not. Took a good amount of brain power to build this in my head and then make it happen. #alpineluddites #backpack #packrafting #expedition #madeinvermont

Most beginners reach for their paddle when things feel unstable. The real skill is in the tilt. Let the water move beneath the boat.

Be WaterWise #17 – Edge It covers edging, ferry gliding, and reading river flow. It starts with balance and learning to decouple your upper body from your hips. From there: eddies, eddy hopping, and ferry gliding — pointing upstream at 11 o’clock, paddling hard, tilting to resist the current, target eddy locked in before you commit.

Your body is the rudder — learn to use it!

Episode 58 is live! Who needs a spoon when you have a wrench? Who needs a whole paddle when you have two blades and a firm, sturdy stick? Welcome to Roman Dial’s world. In this action-packed episode, the legendary Alaskan adventurer recounts some of the harrowing tales that led to the birth of "hellbiking" in the 1980s and eventual worldwide recognition for this type of travel in a 1997 issue of National Geographic. We dive into his pioneering multi-sport journeys in the unforgiving Alaskan wilderness, his transition into a Stanford PhD studying predator-prey interactions in rainforest canopies, and his obsession with ultra-lightweight gear. Whether he’s big-tree climbing or inventing the fat bike’s prehistoric ancestors, Roman is a versatile explorer who has been at the forefront of several outdoor movements. Tune in and prepare to feel both thoroughly inspired and incredibly lazy.

Thanks to everyone who made this possible!

The Waldo Arms in Kaktovik, Alaska. Walt Audi ran the show from grill cook, to airport shuttle, to bush flight reservations. I started my 20 years of trips to the Brooks Range from this storied establishment. According to the guest register I had just missed Roman Dial. I'm calling that our path crossing in the Brooks. The first time was in the Yosemite Cafeteria.
