Peace ✌🏾Love 💕 Spotlight 🩰

Our Show “Dance through the Decade” not only chronologically displayed @spotlightdancenola evolution and Choreographic Catalog but educated the audience as our director @itsmytai_me shared her choreographic inspo from each decade. We’ll be sharing snippets of that info and highlighting a dancer daily!

Demi has been dancing at Spotlight Dance NOLA 7/10 years and is our shining star and content queen. She might be small in stature but her stage presence is 10 feet tall. Demi is passionate about dance and dedicated to becoming better everyday. While she may be one of the younger company members, she loves mentoring our two company minis Athena & Dior! You will definitely see Demi shining in the Spotlight!

Demi was selected to represent the 70s in our company photoshoot because of her fun and energetic presence. We knew she’d be the grooviest girl on set!

The 1970s were a time of empowerment, pride, and embracing identity, where music and art became powerful expressions of strength and freedom. Our piece, “Black Butterfly” represents transformation, beauty, and the courage to rise above limitations while discovering the greatness within. This peace was inspired by the Legendary Legacy of Alvin Ailey & his artistic muse and successor Judith Jamison.

Judith Jamison and Alvin Ailey shared a profound mentor-muse relationship, deeply rooted in mutual respect, artistic collaboration, and an enduring legacy.

Jamison joined the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1965 after Ailey invited her to the company. Over the next 15 years, Jamison became his primary muse and the company’s principal dancer. Ailey choreographed some of his most enduring and challenging roles for her, famously noting she was his “spiritual walker”.The Creation of “Cry”The pinnacle of their collaborative relationship was the creation of the 17-minute solo Cry in 1971. Ailey choreographed the piece—which is dedicated to Black women everywhere—specifically for Jamison, and the performance catapulted her into international stardom. Black Butterfly is an ode to Cry!
