We pair rigorous scholarship with creative practice to advance solutions for racial and ethnic justice. That approach shaped last year's program called Music & Migration Remixed: A Conversation and Concert. The experience capped Meklit Hadero's 2024-25 Visiting Artist appointment with the Institute, @idastanford, and @stanfordaaas, where she also taught a class on music, migration, and storytelling. Music & Migration Remixed opened with a double panel exploring how integral the arts are to shaping the public's understanding of migration. @MeklitMusic, moderating the event, was joined by: • Stanford sociologist Asad L. Asad • @ACLU_Nationwide Legal Director Cecilia Wang • Performance artist Dohee Lee • Activist @NunuKidane • Vocalist @DianaGameros • Journalist @NalanSipar. Then, Meklit and The Movement Immigrant Orchestra closed the program with a concert and musicians drawing on traditions from Ethiopia, Italy, Mali, Spain, Iran, Mexico, Taiwan, India, Cuba and Panama. Learn more about our approach at the link in @stanfordiajs' bio.

🌶️ THE SPICY SOIRÉE PERFORMER LINEUP IS HERE! Get ready for an unforgettable night of music, movement, food, and community. On October 10, we’re thrilled to feature: 💃 Melissa Cruz — Renowned Bay Area flamenco artist who brings the passion and power of flamenco to the stage. @melicruzrocks 🪕 Zedan & Osman — Faisal Zedan and Raman Osman bring together Syrian and Kurdish musical traditions through Arabic percussion, Kurdish strings, and the rich musical heritage of the region. @faisalzdn @ramanosman75 🎶 Diana Gameros feat. Raúl Vargas — Award winning Mexican-born singer, songwriter, composer, and teaching artist Diana Gameros will be joined by Raúl Vargas, a Madrid-born, SF-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who will be playing cajón. @dianagameros @raultrasound We are so excited to bring these world class artists to the stage, a feat made possible through partnership with Movement, the storytelling initiative hosted by Meklit Hadero (@meklitmusic) centering immigrant, migrant, and refugee musicians. 🙏We firmly believe in paying everybody for their expertise and contributions—recognizing that while our budget doesn’t always stretch as far as we wish it could, valuing immigrant creatives is non-negotiable. Too often, immigrant artists are expected to volunteer their labor, and we are committed to changing that narrative. In addition to these incredible artists, the Spicy Soirée will also feature food from Chef Reem Assil of @reemscalifornia & Chef Lorenzo Camaal of @merkadosf, drinks from @merkadosf, thoughtful programming, and our first-ever vendor market! 🎟️ Head to the link in our bio to get your tickets before they’re gone! 🗓️ Saturday, October 10 ⏰ 5:30–10 PM 📍 Merkado — 130 Townsend St., SF Collage by @psimoverit Photo credits: Diana by @christineisabelrivera, Meli by @christinetfu
