“Taryn Smith is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Kenton-on-Sea whose practice is rooted in place, healing, and community. She forages clay from local rivers to create hand-built ceramic vessels and beads, allowing the landscape itself to become part of her creative process.

As a painter and community arts facilitator, she works extensively with rural communities across the Eastern Cape, leading workshops that use art as a tool for healing, expression, and connection. Much of her work focuses on children and individuals who have experienced trauma, creating safe spaces where creativity becomes a pathway to restoration.

Taryn has also trained under and works closely with respected South African visual artist and educator Meshack Masuku, whose lifelong commitment to arts education and community development has influenced generations of artists.

After spending the morning with Taryn and fellow visual artist Diane Erasmus, I left inspired by conversations about healing through art, rebuilding communities, and reconnecting generations. We reflected on children who need nurturing, elders living in isolation, and the importance of creating spaces where both can find purpose, belonging, and love.

I’m excited by a future where we stop waiting for change and begin creating it ourselves. We are capable. We are enough. Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as a handful of clay, a paintbrush, and someone willing to create alongside you.”

VACSA was at Makanda (Grahamstown) Arts Festival.

It was a valuable few days of connecting with artists, creatives, and cultural practitioners from across the country. We had meaningful conversations, expanded our network, and gained useful insight into both the opportunities and the challenges currently shaping the arts sector.

As an organisation, we believe every engagement helps us better understand where support is needed and how we can contribute to practical, long term solutions for the creative community. These conversations continue to inform the work we do.

A heartfelt thank you to @diane_erasmus Dianne Erasmus and Sonwabiso Ngcai for allowing us to interogate their work in depth and through conversation, as well as everyone who took the time to connect with us. We appreciate the warm conversations, shared ideas, and new relationships.

Shout out to @SABC crew @TruFM for giving us airtime, @RMR89.7fm for the opportunity to introduce ourselves…

We look forward to building on these connections and continuing the work together. A thank you to the @Lipato | Umpheki 🫘 for keeping for an authentic food and cultural experience…

What a weekend at Art in the Country 2026 in Hilton, KZN.

Held from 28 to 31 May at Harrington House in the beautiful Midlands, Art in the Country was founded by visual artist Kathy Jacob, who launched the event to create a high-quality exhibition platform for artists. What began as an initiative to showcase and support KwaZulu-Natal artists has grown into a truly national platform, attracting artists and visitors from across South Africa.

What makes the event especially remarkable is that Kathy herself continues to exhibit as a practising visual artist. The fair is clearly driven by a genuine passion for the arts and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing artists today. It is an event created by an artist, for artists.

The energy this past weekend was incredible. It was inspiring to hear artists sharing stories of major sales, large works finding new homes, and many exhibitors selling in impressive volumes. From conversations with artists from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, and beyond, it was clear that Art in the Country has become one of the country’s most respected art gatherings.

The atmosphere was alive with exceptional artwork, live music, great food, and meaningful conversations. Events like these remind us that the arts are not only alive and well in South Africa, but that they deserve even more space to grow, connect communities, and contribute to the economy.

We’re looking forward to officially being part of the event in October -held in Balito, KZN. Dates will be announced soon…

Thank you to Kathy and the organising team for creating a platform that continues to champion artists and celebrate creativity at the highest level.

Spent the day in the presence of colour, memory, and something quietly sacred with Diane Erasmus - @diane_erasmus

From her studio to the coastline of Ramsgate, we stepped into a world where land, sea, and spirit meet on canvas. Diane’s work pulls from nature in a way that feels both grounded and deeply spiritual. Her landscapes and seascapes carry that raw honesty. The kind you don’t just look at, you feel.

We visited her current installation; in collaboration with other South Coast artists; at The Art Café in Ramsgate, where some of her peices sit in quiet conversation with the ocean just beyond it. Later, Diane shared pieces she’s preparing for upcoming showcases at the Hilton Arts Festival in the Midlands, KwaZulu-Natal and the National Arts Festival in Makhanda, Eastern Cape.

There’s something powerful about witnessing work before the world does. Still becoming. Still breathing.

Take a moment to explore her work:
