Thank you to the Amherst County Public Library for hosting another great author festival in their beautiful downtown Amherst location.

It was a pleasure seeing so many local authors, a few familiar readers, and some new faces. And the word is out—I’ve compiled a collection of my short stories into an ebook, Menu of Days. Subscribers will be receiving a free copy soon, and you can get yours now by signing up for my newsletter at EmilyBabbitt.com (link in bio 🔗).

I also picked up a few books from Diane Fanning, Betsy Ashton, and Kaylee Umstead—looking forward to adding these to my TBR.

Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks;
And when she saw what she had done
She gave her father forty-one.

Or did she? Circumstantial evidence had her acquitted from the trials for both of the murders and she lived the rest of her life as a pariah with her sister Emma.

The grisly murders and the sensational trials that followed are presented in a historical fiction narrative style by Diane Fanning in her book Lizzie. Fanning through scores of historical records tries to paint a fictionalised life of the Borden family before the murders and after. Her narrative flow, especially the coverage of the trials, steer you to ponder the many theories presented in the book— was it case of dispute over inheritance ( Mr Borden was known to be a miser) or was it because Lizzie’s queer identity wasn’t understood or welcomed by the society in the 1800s. Or perhaps, a case of crime of passion, committed in a fugue stage with no memory of it after.

Fanning’s writing is gripping, though the book does lag a little in the middle, it nevertheless provides a conclusion that is satisfactory. Is it the truth? We’ll never really know the entirety of what happened that day, as Lizzie admits to her sister, and I guess, as readers… we’ll continue to speculate.

Book review for: “Lizzie” by Diane Fanning

🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰

This book was really good. The chapters are the perfect length, and it’s a pretty fast read. I don’t know much about Lizzie Borden except for what was in that Lifetime movie and mini-series with Christina Ricci. I know that this is also a fictionalized version of the true story. But I mean, like who really knows what happened? This book seems close to the truth if you ask me. I did some Googling while reading it, and found that Lizzie really was a spoiled brat. It makes sense that she would murd3r her stepmom and dad because he changed some things in his will. People have k!lled for even less than that. If you enjoy true crime, you should check out this book. Diane Fanning is a famous true crime author. And if you enjoy reading about Lizzie Borden, you should also read this book.

That wraps up book 38 of 2025!

It is always a delight to perform my art on human subjects but what is truly the best part here is all the conversation and advice from a crew who work with murderous women or wrote books about them….”never date a man with the last name Peterson” and “don’t date women from Texas, Florida, or North Carolina”. They have the inside scoop….

Had the distinct pleasure of working with @dianefanning on the set of 20/20 ABC NEWS last week! Thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with her and the crew, she is an accomplished true crime writer and has written extensive books on the topic as well as many others. With an analytical mind and a background in chemistry before becoming a writer she is the ultimate creative problem solver and the best part about doing her hair and makeup was the riveting conversation! I can’t wait for the episode and the binge read all of her books!
