Chapter 1: ATTENTION ALL MEN…

If you are driving down the road and see a young woman working hard, taking care of the lawn, landscaping, on a ladder trimming trees, power washing…..

If you absolutely feel compelled to stop right there in the middle of the road, holding up cars behind you, or stopping your bike in front of her house-it better be to tell her what a fantastic job she’s doing.

NOT to criticize the work she’s doing, how she’s doing it wrong, where the snow is being put when there’s 5 feet of it, or that the leaves are blowing into the road.

Because you may just find yourself faced to face with a young fiery widow who is not afraid to school you in how much she does know then tell you where to shove it.

To the men that do say “You are doing an amazing job”-thank you 🙏
You have no idea how hard it is to it all and do it alone.

My fellow widows-you’ve got this! If I can do it, you can too. PS, YouTube DIY is a God sent lol.

Mike & I felt the weight of that often. I felt the weight of that-in trying to lift him up.

The myth that if you just stay positive it will all work out doesn’t help.

Chapter 1: Dolly Parton said what before she died?!

Days before she died, Dolly Parton reflected on the last year without Carl, and caregiving while he was sick.

“I had health problems that I didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.” She highlighted a very real issue among caregivers-we ignore ourselves when we are so focused on our partner or loved one.

During Mike’s last few months of life, actually during his whole cancer journey, my appetite took a hit. I cancelled or postponed all my annual health appointments. I wouldn’t eat until he did. There were times I went days without eating and didn’t even realize it. Weeks I went with barely 3 hours of sleep.

After he died my grief was so great, I maybe ate one meal a day. It took months and a triple bout of flu, covid, walking pneumonia (back-to-back) to wake me up. My health mattered! I needed to care for myself as much as I cared for him. I made every annual appointment and scheduled some preventative ones.

My DO said, “Wow, at your last appointment you weighed 110, today you weigh 103.” I thought she had the wrong chart and said as much. It wasn’t until I saw the funeral video that I realized she was right.

Of course now I’m fighting perimenopause so my weight is going the other way lol 😂 . But, i workout almost daily. I walk 30 minutes + almost daily. I try to eat healthy and 3 meals a day. I don’t drink alcohol often (a few times a year). I even had a cardiology workup this year.

Mike would not want my health to suffer because he died. As caregivers, it is vital for us to care for ourselves as much as we cared for them.
