“Like noise, the function of silence as a privileged aesthetic category in electronic music discourses deserves critical attention. One of the most noteworthy works composed by John Cage is 4’33”, the ‘silent piece.’ This piece troubled notions of absolute silence and arguably helped to open Western music to wider range of sounds.” — Tara Rodgers, Pink Noise, 2010.

Silence can publish the future.

“When a nuclear weapon explodes near enough to the ground for its fireball to touch the ground, it forms a crater. Many of thousands of tons of earth from the crater of a large explosion are pulverized into trillions of particles. These particles are contaminated by radioactive atoms produced by the nuclear explosion. Thousands of tons of the particles are carried up into a mushroom-shaped cloud, miles above the earth. These radioactive particles then fall out of the mushroom cloud, or out of the dispersing cloud of particles blown by the winds — thus becoming fallout.” — Cresson H. Kearny, Nuclear War Survival Skills, 1987

What if the greatest force isn’t dropped by bombs, but by books?

The stories we publish, edit, and circulate shape how we understand reality, and how we act on it.

Our Master’s in Design Publishing Futures is for those who want to explore the power of narrative, publishing, and communication as tools for critical intervention in the contemporary world.

If this is the kind of territory you want to work in, here’s who we’re looking for:

Open to designers, artists and agents from the cultural and communications sector, at various stages of their practice and career — as well as candidates from sciences, humanities, politics, economics, sociology and other fields that intersect with — or can benefit from — the interdisciplinarity and collaborative dynamics of contemporary design practice.
