Tritonus (Latin/German) or tritone (English) is a musical interval spanning three whole tones (six semitones), creating an augmented fourth or diminished fifth. Historically termed diabolus in musica (devil in music) due to its extreme dissonance, it is a key, tense interval commonly used in jazz, classical, and heavy metal music.
