Challenge complete! 🪴

Thanks to @organicmechanicsoil and @digginginassociation for the opportunity to participate in the fall container garden challenge!

This is my entry, a full shade fall planter with Alocasia Polly, Heuchera Lava Lamp, Pigeon Purple Flowering Kale, and variegated creeping fig. The first pic was taken today. Swipe to see it the day it was planted one month ago.

It performed beautifully and grew quite a bit over the last month! The high-quality soil is very well draining, which keeps this planter from getting too wet since it’s in the shade. The feeder packs OM sent have allowed the plants to grow healthy and strong without overstimulating their growth.

I love how the veining on the alocasia leaves resemble a skeleton. 💀 Fitting for the season! 🎃

Here are the planting and judging photos of my entry in the DiggingIn Association Fall Container Challenge (after a 4 week growing period using Organic Mechanics potting mix and fertilizer packs). My design goal was to create an evening/vespertine/moonlight garden relying on frosted and variegated foliage. I also wanted something that would pop during the day, so I added the Persian shield and ornamental peppers. When I'm teaching workshops at Longwood, I'm very deliberate about building the plant or cut flower palette. For this friendly and fun competition, and for my 2025 Philadelphia Flower Show demonstration, I took what I like to call the "Iron Chef Approach." For the Flower Show, I had my color themes and I shopped from the merchants in the exhibit hall a couple of hours before my program - less carrying, more fun, and the flowers/foliage had already been cleared of disease or pests, which is necessary to protect the live plants in the Horticourt. Here, I was curious about what I could design from one independent garden center very late in the shopping season (a couple of my plants we're two for one 😂). I was also designing for a front porch that only gets morning sun, and the first hour or two it's dappled. So how did we do? (slide two, please) The frosted houseplants struggled, with the arrowhead (probably Alocasia) losing most of it's foliage and the Pothos getting nibbled by something. On the other hand, everyone else thrived and put on fresh foliage in spite of the shady situation (and excessive rains in Pennsylvania during the last month). I did lose a design element, but it's neighbors filled in the space, so I'll take that as a win (I'm also very pleased that the deer didn't turn this into a 6 course meal!) As far as the Organic Mechanics products, I'm very impressed - I have an abundant and healthy container planting in a challenging placement. I won't be rebranding from the Flower Sommelier to the Foliage Sommelier any time soon 😊, but this was a great education and a chance to get out of my comfort zone! @digginginassociation @organicmechanicsoil #flowersommelier #diggingin #organicmechanics #containergarden #gardening

Four weeks ago, the directions said to have fun while planting… so naturally, I danced. 😜💃🌿

Now four weeks later, look at this planter!

It’s been sitting in full Tennessee sun, right next to a brick wall, through average highs around 87 degrees and even some 100-degree days.

I used Organic Mechanics potting soil, and I’m so impressed with how well everything has held up.

Even the daisies are covered in fresh buds and getting ready to bloom again.

Apparently a little dancing and good potting soil go a long way.

The plants get all the attention but what’s underneath it matters too.

When I’m planting a container, I want to set my plants up for success. This means planting in a soil that holds moisture but not too much, drains well, and can offer other soil-building benefits too.

So when I had the opportunity to trial @organicmechanicsoil, I jumped at it.
