This week I had the opportunity to bring Bike Vessel back to the Chicago International Film Festival for a special community screening. The Chicago International Film Festival was always the dream festival for this film. From the beginning, I hoped Bike Vessel would be part of its lineup. To have our world premiere there in 2023 and return this week for another screening was a meaningful full circle moment. It also took me back to July 10, 2023, when I got to share the news with my dad that our film had been accepted into the festival. After spending years making this documentary together, it's great to have the opportunity to celebrate it. Thank you to everyone who came out, asked thoughtful questions, and shared your own stories after the screening. Those conversations are one of my favorite parts of documentary filmmaking. I’m incredibly grateful to @yes_itsnatasha, @viviantang, the team at @chifilmfest , @chicagodcase , @independentlens , @kartemquin and PBS for believing in Bike Vessel and continuing to support independent documentary storytelling. If you haven’t had a chance to watch Bike Vessel, it’s currently streaming nationwide for free on PBS through Independent Lens. 📸 Photo credit: @purplephotoco

Over the past three years, I have had the honor of partnering with an extraordinary group of people to tell the story of Obama’s presidency through short films within the Obama Presidential Center Museum. I am deeply grateful and proud to have been a part of this. The museum and entire campus are a testament to the indomitable human spirit. I can’t wait for everyone to experience it.

Greater Englewood was profoundly impacted by mid-20th century discriminatory housing practices, which extracted an estimated $3.4 to $4.3 billion in wealth from aspiring Black homeowners in #Chicago through predatory land sale contracts. Through strategic home repairs, block beautification, and community-building, #UnBlockedEnglewood offers a powerful blueprint for restoring dignity and wealth to historically disinvested neighborhoods. Since our launch in 2023—in collaboration with 16 block residents, MacArthur Genius @tonikaj, @chicagobungalow, and @englewoodartscollective—UnBlocked Englewood has: 💚 Reclaimed 5 vacant lots, 2 of which are now owned by block residents 💚 Made critical safety repairs to 16 homes, including new roofs, back porches, furnaces, electrical, plumbing, and insulation 💚 Beautified the block with a new block club sign and art by @biancapastel, @kenyacree, @jtothenell, Tonika Johnson, and Amanda Williams 💚 Organized and celebrated with residents and collaborators at bi-monthly block meetings with workshops, annual summer block parties, fall Friendsgivings, and the special documentary premiere All of this has been made possible by incredible supporters: @thechicagocommunitytrust, Schreiber Philanthropy, @chicagodcase & the Mayor’s Office of Equity and Racial Justice, @sustainourfuturefoundation, Driehaus Foundation, @terraamericanart, @usdn_network, The Joseph and Bessie Feinberg Foundation, and the many individual donors! Digifé, a Chicago-based production company, recently earned its first Chicago/Midwest Emmy® Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Magazine Program – Single Program/Series category. Their documentary-style series, “You Don’t Know CHI”, is fully produced by the Digifé team and created/hosted by Chicago historian Shermann “Dilla” Thomas. The show highlights the neighborhoods, people, and places that shaped the city’s cultural impact, with a special guest featured in each episode. Season One is now airing on FOX 32 Chicago on Saturday and Sunday evenings. They’ve been a proud ProductionHUB member since 2019, and we’re thrilled to celebrate this milestone with them.
