“Big Apple, 3 am”

For anyone that grew up watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series from the 1980s, it's likely that you also begged your parents to take you to see the live-action films, took up martial arts and started eating pizza. Oh, and you played some of Konami's games from that era too.

Over time, Konami's classic Turtles games have become surprisingly sought after, as gamers with expendable income track down the titles they grew up with. If you wanted to buy all the original NES, SNES, Mega Drive and Game Boy games, it would cost you around £300. So to have them all here in this 'Cowabunga Collection' from Digital Eclipse is a godsend. Half of the games in this collection I've played before.

The option to play the original arcade game, Turtles In Time, Tournament Fighters, and The Hyperstone Heist online with others is a welcome addition. So too is the Turtle’s Lair, an archive that includes scans of instruction books, concept art, comic book covers, magazine adverts and more.

Coming back to these games decades later, the realisation hits that some of them are just a little bit (dare I say it?)... shallow. Sure there are now side-scrolling brawlers that can boast a little bit more of everything. But for its time, Konami's games (particularly the arcade games and their console conversions) had a simple and fun 'pick-up-and-play' vibe.

Turtles in Time is probably up there as one of Konami's best arcade games of the early 1990s. Having up to four players joining the fight was amazing.

#turtletuesday!!! Never been more super stoked for a #videogame release and not just any video game but the #ps4 #targetexclusive #cowabungacollection of the thirteen #teenagemutantninjaturtles video games from the various game consoles that were developed from #konami between 1989 and 1994. My sister and I had The Hyperstone Heist (1992) on the Sega Genesis and we would play until we beat the game almost every time. So excited to play it again but also try the other games we never had the opportunity to play. Just look at all the exclusive items and #tmntartwork, some created by the cocreater Kevin Eastman himself!!!

Protip for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1989 Arcade): In the Sewers (Scene 2, Act 2), if you get your turtle as close to the edge without touching the water (with just your toes hanging off the edge), you won't be harmed by the foot soldiers or the mousers.
