BALANCE SERIES: ACTION BEFORE MOTIVATION

Sometimes we wait to feel motivated before we start — but motivation doesn’t always come first.

When we’re facing something we don’t want to do, waiting for the “right” feeling can keep us stuck. Taking a small action instead can help us move forward, even when motivation is low.

This is why Action Before Motivation can be a useful skill to practise, especially during busy or stressful times at college.

Swipe through to see some of the ways taking action can support you.

💭 Your Balance Challenge: What’s one small thing you could start today, even if you don’t feel motivated yet?

First up in this year's Balance Series: Action Before Motivation.

Have you ever found yourself waiting until you feel motivated before starting something? Maybe it's an assignment you've been putting off, studying for an exam, getting back into a routine or doing something you've been meaning to do.

Sometimes, we wait for motivation to arrive before we take action. But the reality is that motivation doesn't always come first — sometimes, action comes first.

In Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), behavioural activation focuses on how taking action, even when we don't feel like it, can help us build momentum and improve our mood.

🌱 So, where do you start?

✨ Break the task into one small step.
✨ Set a timer for five minutes.
✨ Focus on starting, rather than finishing.
✨ Notice and celebrate the small wins along the way.

You don't need to complete the whole assignment — just read the brief.
You don't need to study all evening — just choose one topic.
You don't need to feel completely ready — just take that first step.

Remember, this isn't about pushing yourself when you genuinely need rest. It's about recognising when waiting to feel motivated might be keeping you stuck.

💭 Your Balance Challenge: Think of one thing you've been putting off. What's one small action you could take today?

You don't have to feel motivated to begin. Sometimes, motivation follows action.

Starting college tomorrow? You might be buzzing with excitement one minute and full of nerves the next — and that's completely normal.

New course, new people, new routine, new independence. It's a lot at once. You don't have to have it all figured out, and you don't have to pick between excited and worried — most first years feel both.

Athlone Chamber is the primary voice of business in Athlone. Through successful collaboration, development and promotion of the town and its Region they campaign and push for the economic growth of Athlone.
Athlone Chamber of Commerce & Industry is also well positioned as the leading business organisation for the promotion and development of economic and commercial activity in the region - and therefore represents the views of SMEs and shops and businesses of all kinds in the area so I was very pleased to invite the Chamber President Regina Bushell and the CEO Tommy Hogan to visit the European Parliament this week and meet with key officials of DG GROW in the European Commission where we discussed the very urgent need to speed up the simplification process when it comes to administration and processing of grants and Rules and regulations that apply at both member state and EU level.

We will have more to say on these crucial issues later in the week in the MULLOOLY MATTERs podcast

I have know Fr Shay Casey for over 30 years. As Chaplain to the students at Technological University of the Shannon, Athlone and Athlone RTC, Marist Athlone and Our Lady’s Bower Secondary School before that, he has performed an extraordinary public service - providing support and assistance to thousands of students at key moments in their lives , offering spiritual support and helping build a 3rd level institution into an International centre of excellence. At times of crisis Shay came into his own - meeting the needs of students , staff and their families often when tragedy struck and sheltering students from home and abroad who had literally no place to go. It’s been a pleasure to know him as a friend over all those years. His home place is just up the road from my mother’s in Killashee county Longford and it was there in that parish the community gathered in huge numbers yesterday to celebrate his 50th anniversary in the priesthood along with Clondra man Jimmie McDonnell. There was a genuine feeling of great warmth for the 2 men - and afterwards a wonderful celebration at the clubhouse of St. Brigid’s, Killashee GAA and Magans Bar in this lovely village . I wholeheartedly congratulate Shay on his big day and a lifetime of great work . Some people watch on while others roll up the sleeves in this life - Shay will always be in the latter category - a doer not just a talker - a mentor, a shoulder to cry on , a person to listen - long may he continue to be such an important part of life in the midlands !
