Claremont Lewis Museum of Art in Claremont, CA presents Samella! Black as Lacquer and Iron. The exhibition illuminates the extraordinary life and profound influence of Dr. Samella Lewis as an art historian, educator, philanthropist, and artist. The exhibition includes works by Claude Lewis, Harmon Outlaw, Alison Saar, Howard Smith and others, as well as drawings and prints by Samella Lewis. The exhibition closes November 15.

A seminal figure in 20th-century American art, Lewis was raised in New Orleans, where she met her most important mentor, lifelong friend and second mother, Elizabeth Catlett, at Dillard University. She followed in Catlett’s footsteps to graduate in studio art at Hampton University in Virginia. Lewis was the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in fine art and art history.

While finishing her doctorate, Lewis taught art at Morgan State University and then became the first Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Florida A&M University in 1953.

Something new is coming to the museum 👀

A seminal figure in 20th-century American art, Samella Sanders Lewis (1923-2022) was a trailblazing art history professor at Scripps College and considered the first American woman polymath of African descent to receive a PhD in the history of art. Her extraordinary life and global legacy celebrate and perpetuate the visual arts not only of African Americans and Africans but also of Asians, Asian Americans, Austronesians, and other indigenous peoples within and neighboring the Pacific Rim and Western Hemisphere.

The Claremont Lewis Museum of Art exhibition Samella! Black as Lacquer and Iron, curated by her Scripps student Francine Farr, illuminates Dr. Lewis’ legacy as an Asianist and Africanist art historian, educator, philanthropist, and artist. The exhibition, sponsored by Gould Asset Management LLC, will open with a reception on Saturday, August 15 from 5-8 p.m., and remain on view through November 15, 2026.

Founded in 1869, @DillardUniversity was created to expand education for Black students in New Orleans through predecessor schools established in 1869, which later joined to form Dillard University.

Dillard launched Louisiana’s first baccalaureate nursing program in 1942, a Bleu Devil legacy of leadership in healthcare.
