Always take time at your challenging locations to see if you can find an approach that works. Never assume you can’t get in position just because someone else said so. Two overhangs here didn’t stop the crew from confirming their access to Side C/3 of this multi-story commercial.

Positioning. Talked about but seldom with any meat on the bones so to speak explaining the specifics or the priorities or the why. It’s not about photo ops.
⠀
🚩 If you roll in as the 1st due truck own it. Period. No staging. No hesitation. No letting the engines get in first. No waiting for orders to set up. Own the real estate.
⠀
🚩 Spot for the aerial every time even if it’s a quint.
⠀
🚩 First priority is rescue. Position for people in the widows, balconies or roofs but smartly.
⠀
🚩 Second priority is to be positioned to save the largest remaining part of the building should the initial fire attack plan not work out.
⠀
🚩 Aerial goes up every time. Even with nothing showing investigations.
⠀
Train to learn it. Drill to perfect it.

Knowing your capabilities is one thing but knowing your limitations is another. @missionfirefighters handled business by applying sound principles with their 75’ aerial. The truck got the inside to make the throw and alley jacked the non-fire side to not take up more space than needed. This doesn’t happen by accident. Photo by @dime_stackin_firefighter

Modern aerials are designed for standalone use. In other words “non-supported”. Suffice it to say aerial’s are not intended to be used as bridges and rest on a building. Does it happen? Sure, but it shouldn’t be the routine as repeated contact can cause cracks allowing moisture inside which leads to rust and weakening.
⠀
🚨 In normal use the top rails of the aerial are under tension and the bottom rails under compression. This is visible as the downward bowing you see.
⠀
🚨 The more extended the aerial the greater the deflection. The lower the angle the greater the deflection. These two factors are not mutually exclusive and need to be kept in mind as they are relative to each other.
⠀
🚨 Know your rig tip load and distributed load. There is a huge difference and should be clearly marked on your rig. This is where spacing out personnel will minimize additional deflection and contact with the building based on your extension and angle. Your gauge or display should show how many personnel per section for a given angle.
⠀
🚨 When you’re putting personnel on a roof or in a window assume their weight will cause addition downward deflection. Leave enough space for that additional deflection without the aerial contacting the parapet, sill, etc.

Performance. It’s all that matters. The end result. Even when it’s painfully obvious fire companies and even whole departments often turn a blind eye to poor fire ground performance. Why does this happen?
⠀
Sometimes it’s because they are oblivious to it because they are out of touch, sometimes they don’t know how to deal with it or in some cases they don’t want to deal with it. So how do we fix it it’s not as complicated as you think)?
⠀
Like many things the first step is admitting there is an issue and then identifying those issues. And in the fire service there are essentially 5 issues that can be found in common with poor performing companies and departments. Thats it. No matter career, combination or volunteer, big or small, it’s the same issues.
⠀
After identifying which of the issues are present it’s a matter of developing a plan and implementing it. It sounds daunting and difficult but it isn’t. Reach out to us at @c_side_consultants to discuss what can be done now to improve your organization and service to your community.

Floodlighting…we need it but how much is enough? And how do we angle the lighting to help and not hurt.

Knowing your rig. Knowing where you fit in. Knowing your assignment. Defaulting to “go” and having to be told to hold up or stop. Those are what matter.
⠀
In this case a 1-story house where the truck (a reserve at that) still had to get in position regardless of other rigs or street width.
⠀
To make it work the Chauffeur knew he could alley jack the non-fire side and did it. That he had the needed height to throw over the engine and he did just that. That his aerial would reach the objective and it did. And where his waterway was positioned to not be a hindrance and it wasn’t.
⠀
It’s the little things we take for granted that combine for success. Now this doesn’t come without one big ingredient… reps. Got to have them to bring it all together for a timely and fluid operation so make the throw every time.

Yesterday was my last day with the City of Stafford Fire Department after 35-years, the last 20 as Fire Chief. The things accomplished by the department in moving to a career department didn’t come without struggle and challenges but through it all we got most of it done come hell or high water. No one person does it all and I lived it with the amazing staff who worked everyday to get it done for the citizens and the department. I couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished and what is yet to come. Special thanks to @hmicsupermex for handling business and setting the standards. @mattricks02 for growing into something to be proud of and putting the party together and to Mark VanBerschot for personally building the shadow box as well as the men and women of the department. Keep doing what you do and never stop. On to the next 35-years with the best partner and copilot I could ask for and the adventures to come with @vero042725

A wonderful opportunity and honor to present aerial operations and company mindset at the annual Osceola FD Benevolent’s Leadership & Tactics Conference in honor of Lt Mickel and FF Begg. A great turnout of personnel from across Florida all wanting to be better for their communities. Amazing opportunity to present alongside @stack.er5 @rich.driscoll.92 @aojfire
