BAD WEATHER | West 7th, St. Paul, MN

There’s something fitting about a brewery named Bad Weather looking its best beneath an unpredictable Minnesota sky.

Located along West 7th Street in St. Paul, Bad Weather Brewing has become a familiar gathering place for craft beer, good company, and evenings spent beneath the lights of its outdoor patio.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to capture the brewery as daylight gives way to night, when the warmth of the building begins to stand out against the deepening blue sky.

Layers of navy and teal stretch overhead, with scattered stars and soft clouds catching the last traces of sunset. Below, the illuminated Bad Weather sign anchors the building, while glowing windows and patio string lights bring warmth to the scene.

People gather around tables beneath the lights, their silhouettes adding life to the brewery’s outdoor space. Across the sidewalk, long shadows and geometric patterns create a contrast between the inviting atmosphere inside and the cooler evening beyond.

It’s a different perspective on a familiar West Seventh destination, where even the threat of bad weather feels like part of the charm.

WHATABURGER | By the Bay

There’s something unmistakably Texas about Whataburger, from its signature orange-and-white stripes to the familiar glow of its restaurants after dark.

But the Whataburger by the Bay location in Corpus Christi is something entirely its own.

Overlooking Corpus Christi Bay, this two-story waterfront restaurant stands out with its towering A-frame entrance, sweeping exterior staircase, and second-story dining area offering views of the water. Opened in 1999 and recognized by Whataburger as its flagship location, the restaurant holds a special place in the company’s history, right in the city where Whataburger got its start in 1950.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to capture the character of the building as evening settles over the coast. Deep blue shadows stretch across the parking lot, palm trees silhouette against a vibrant orange and coral sky, and the restaurant’s illuminated windows and signage bring the architecture to life.

The familiar striped roof becomes the centerpiece, while the people gathering along the upper deck and entering below give the scene a sense of activity against the fading daylight.

A little Texas nostalgia, a coastal sunset, and one of Corpus Christi’s most recognizable Whataburger locations.

BROTHER JUSTUS WHISKEY | Northeast Minneapolis

There’s something about a Minnesota evening that makes gathering with good company feel even better. The last colors of sunset, the warmth of illuminated windows, and conversations that carry on well after dark.

Located in Northeast Minneapolis, Brother Justus Whiskey Co. is a Minnesota distillery known for its American single malt whiskey, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients and a distinctly Minnesota approach to whiskey making.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to capture the atmosphere surrounding the distillery as evening settles in. The towering architectural feature on the left, expansive windows, and glowing entrance give the building a distinctive presence against the deep blue sky and warm sunset.

Outside, guests gather around tables and across the patio, enjoying the evening beneath a crescent moon and scattered stars. The contrast between the cool evening colors and the warmth of the distillery creates a scene that feels both lively and inviting.

A celebration of Minnesota craftsmanship, good company, and evenings worth lingering over.

RED RABBIT | North Loop

There’s something about Minneapolis after dark. The city takes on a different energy as restaurant windows glow, sidewalks fill with people, and the evening becomes an invitation to stay out a little longer.

Located in Minneapolis’s North Loop neighborhood, Red Rabbit brings Italian-inspired dining to the heart of the city, with a menu featuring pizza, pasta, oysters, and cocktails.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to capture the restaurant’s distinctive architecture and the atmosphere surrounding it as evening settles in. The warm orange and red tones of the building contrast with the deep blues of the sky, while illuminated signage and glowing windows draw attention to the entrance.

People gather along the sidewalks and inside the restaurant, bringing a sense of movement and life to the scene. Above it all, a few stars shine against the evening sky.

A little city nightlife, good food, and the anticipation of an evening well spent.

RED COW | 50th & France

Autumn in Minnesota has a character all its own. The changing leaves, cooler evenings, and warm glow of neighborhood restaurants as the sun disappears behind the trees.

Located near 50th & France in Minneapolis’s Fulton neighborhood, Red Cow opened its original location in 2013, bringing its signature burgers, craft beer, and neighborhood dining experience to the Twin Cities.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to capture the restaurant surrounded by the colors of fall. Brilliant orange and golden leaves rise above the building, while the glowing Red Cow sign, illuminated windows, and string lights along the patio bring warmth to the evening scene.

Guests gather inside while others enjoy the patio beneath the lights. A crescent moon and a few stars complete the autumn atmosphere, giving the scene a little extra character as day turns to night.

A little Minnesota fall color, a familiar neighborhood destination, and the warmth of an evening out.

PLYMOUTH GRAND 15 | Plymouth, MN

There’s something about a night at the movies that never gets old. The anticipation of what’s playing, the smell of popcorn, the crowds gathering outside, and the moment the lights go down before the opening scene.

Located in Plymouth, Minnesota, Plymouth Grand 15 is part of the Mann Theatres family, bringing the big-screen experience to the western Twin Cities suburbs.

With the addition of IMAX, the theater is entering an exciting new chapter, making this an especially fitting time to feature it in the dinerlight collection.

For this piece, I wanted to capture that familiar excitement of arriving at the movies. The illuminated entrance, bold architectural lines, warm sunset colors, and people making their way inside give the theater a cinematic presence of its own.

A place where the building itself deserves a moment on the big screen.

PEQUOD’S PIZZA | Chicago, IL

Some places are worth staying up late for.

In Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, Pequod’s Pizza has earned a reputation for its signature caramelized crust, created when cheese meets the hot edge of the crust. It’s a distinctive take on Chicago-style pan style pizza and a big part of what makes Pequod’s a destination for pizza lovers.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to capture the character of the building after sunset. The glowing red neon, brickwork, blue awning, and warm light spilling through the windows create a lively contrast against the evening sky.

A few people gathered outside bring the scene to life, while the vintage marquee and unmistakable signage remain the focal points.

BALLAST POINT BREWING | Anaheim, CA

From its beginnings in San Diego to the heart of Downtown Disney, Ballast Point Brewing has built a reputation around craft beer, creativity and a distinctly Southern California identity.

Opening on January 16, 2019, Ballast Point’s Anaheim location became the first brewery in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. The two-story brewery and restaurant features an on-site brewing system, a spacious rooftop patio overlooking Downtown Disney, and a menu pairing Southern California-inspired food with Ballast Point’s signature beers.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to emphasize the building’s distinctive architecture, with its tall vertical entrance, illuminated signage and outdoor patio overlooking the pedestrian walkway.

I reinterpreted the scene at the transition between sunset and night, using deep coastal blues, warm golden light and subtle coral tones along the horizon. The silhouettes of visitors moving through the plaza add a sense of activity while keeping the brewery itself as the centerpiece.

Another Southern California destination, seen in a different light.

MR. PAUL’S SUPPER CLUB | Edina, MN

Mr. Paul’s Supper Club is a tribute to the man behind the name.

Chef Tommy Begnaud and mixologist Nick Kosevich created Mr. Paul’s at 50th & France, opening the restaurant in December 2021. The concept draws from Begnaud’s connection to Louisiana and the childhood visits he made there to see his grandfather, Mr. Paul. His grandfather’s warmth, personality and love of bringing people together became part of the inspiration behind the restaurant that carries his name.

That influence runs through Mr. Paul’s, where the tradition of a supper club meets New Orleans, Cajun and Creole influences. Steaks, chops, seafood and pasta are part of the menu, while cocktails have been central to the concept from the beginning.

Located at 3917 Market Street in Edina, Mr. Paul’s sits in the heart of the 50th & France district.

For this dinerlight piece, I reinterpreted the restaurant through deep blues and teals, pushing the warm light from the entrance, windows and patio into yellows and oranges. The people gathered outside bring life to the scene while the original architecture and unmistakable Mr. Paul’s sign keep the place recognizable.

PALMER’S BAR | Minneapolis, MN

For 119 years, there was a bar at 500 Cedar Avenue on the West Bank.

The history of the place stretches back to 1906, when the Minneapolis Brewing Company, predecessor to Grain Belt, owned the bar. Over the generations, the little Cedar Avenue watering hole changed hands and names, survived Prohibition and watched the neighborhood around it change before eventually becoming known as Palmer’s.

Palmer’s grew into one of Minneapolis’ most recognizable dive bars, shaped as much by its regulars and characters as by the drinks behind the bar. Music became a defining part of its identity, with generations of local musicians playing inside and on the patio. Palmfest brought bands together outside each summer, while pianist Cornbread Harris became a beloved Sunday-night fixture in the bar’s later years.

On September 14, 2025, Palmer’s held its final day of business with an 11-hour farewell filled with music. Its closing ended 119 years of bar history at 500 Cedar Avenue and brought one of the West Bank’s longest-running gathering places to an end.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted Palmer’s to look exactly like the kind of place that couldn’t be polished into something else. The glowing signs, narrow building, fenced patio and graffiti-covered dumpster sit against deep blues, oranges and purples as the last light disappears over Cedar Avenue.

SOCIABLE CIDER WERKS | Northeast Minneapolis, MN

Sociable Cider Werks started with two longtime friends, a garage and an idea for a different kind of cider.

Jim Watkins and Wade Thompson had been brewing together when they began experimenting with cider, inspired in part by the dry, French-style cider Thompson’s father-in-law had been making for years. In 2013, they turned that interest into Sociable Cider Werks.

They opened their taproom at 1500 Fillmore Street NE on Black Friday in November 2013. From the beginning, Sociable approached cider with a craft-brewing mentality, working with apples alongside ingredients more commonly associated with brewing, including grains and hops. Freewheeler would become one of the cidery’s signature dry ciders.

More than a decade later, Sociable is still making cider in Minneapolis, and the Fillmore Street taproom remains a gathering place for drinks, events and time outside on the patio.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted the taproom to feel as sociable as its name. Warm light spills from the building and patio while people gather beneath the string lights, all set against deep blues and the last orange glow of the evening sky.
