POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Every graduation is extremely bittersweet. So proud of the progress of our grads, but so sad to see them leave our hallowed halls. Congratulations, Class of 2026. We made beautiful music together. From the Kennedy Center to Southern Division to Carnegie Hall, you have been such an amazing group from start to finish. Please promise to always keep a song in your hearts. 💚🎶💛

It was a good morning for the Singing Gators! Adjudicated by Charleston Southern’s Dr. Luiken, all of our students who performed earned Superiors and got fantastic feedback! Thanks to Dr. Loar and Mr. Brunson for preparing these singers for this experience, and a special thanks to Ally Yablonski for being the extra shoulder to cry on, sounding board, and pair of hands to support these kids! I would be insane not to recognize and especially thank the amazingly talented Blade Boulware for being so giving of his time and being so kind and patient with these young singers!

All State 2026! This year’s event was nothing short of exceptional. The clinicians were truly PHENOMENAL and the choirs brought a level of musicianship that made South Carolina proud.

Our students, Lucas Allocco, Isla Carter, Keelyn Davis, David Gragg, Samantha Hollis, Taryn Kean, Irelyn McCutchen, George Nesmith, and Trevor Sawicz, represented RBHS in all three choirs. They displayed the attentiveness, discipline, and decorum necessary for these long intensive rehearsals and were shining examples of our Gator Choir!

It wasn’t all serious though-not by a long shot! They also had lots of fun together in the cars, at dinner, at the hotel. They unpacked rehearsals, reenacted conductor quirks, played silly games, etc.

All in all, All State was a definite success-be sure to audition next year, choir!

The best stories feature a reluctant hero (or two)…

This week (Monday), our production of Shrek the Musical at River Bluff High School was put on the brink of shutdown because of the unfortunate sudden unavailability of our title character, Shrek, three days before Opening Night. The production crew (aka, the adults in charge, director Emily, choreographer Katie, vocal coach Matt, and music director me) were in shock as we went through the 4700 different possible scenarios we could think of to still give these students a performance to be proud of. Our first seemingly viable solution did not get the approval of the licensing company, so if we didn’t find a Shrek, we had to cancel.

We couldn’t let that happen.

We also couldn’t bring in a stranger to tell this story alongside a cast who had created a beautiful bond and chemistry with our original actor. Why no understudy? Many reasons. Moot point now, and it adds to the drama, so just enjoy the story and wait for the happy ending, will ya?

So we went where the love already existed. In the 11th hour Matt (who was my student teacher last year and didn’t even have to be a part of this show at all) and Emily (who is the director, their teacher, and close in age) stepped up and into the giant smelly shoes of an ogre. Matt learned the “big sings” and blocking REALLY QUICKLY and Emily took the more intricate and sensitive scenes (singing as well). All this so the children-who all performed outstandingly and with such heart-could still have their time in the spotlight.

It doesn’t get much more heroic than that.

…and that is how a little ogre and a princess and his best friend and a whole host of freaky fairy tale creatures came to live in the River Bluff swamp happily ever after, after all.

THE END.

Starting with a clip from Day One, this has been a day and a half of beautiful, quality music making with someone I’m so proud to call my friend, Emily Bohl @erbohl, at the Lex1 District Honor Choir! I fell in love with pieces, got to watch our Lex1 students learn and grow, and admired the expertise at the helm! So glad I work alongside fantastic colleagues that teach their students to be hardworking musicians-that’s how events like this are successful!

RBHS Choir Leadership spent their Saturday at the USC Choral Leadership Clinic. We learned basic conducting skills, techniques for running sectionals for student-led learning, and what it means to be a leader: Influence, Example, and JOY! We definitely have that together in RBHS Choirs!
