"Turning chaos into something cinematic" - Downtown LA native Randy Carrillo brought a piece of 007 legacy to life on canvas. This stunning, chaotic mixed-media piece blends high culture and street art. @directedby_randy pulled elements from decades of Bond, from the classic Aston Martin DB5 silhouette, to the dark shadow of Connery’s definitive 007 stance, mixed with bold, graffiti-inspired iconography and tag work. The text, "I Dream for a Living," captures the entire ethos. It isn’t just a painting; it’s the centerpiece of an entire curated vibe, seamlessly sitting with rare vinyl (we see you, Illmatic! 🎧) and pop art icons like the Haring dancing figures. #JamesBond007 #GraffitiArt #StreetArtStyle #LAArtist #InteriorArt

3 years ago was when it all started not knowing where it would take me. Doing nails has been a passion of mine for a long time now and I’m beyond blessed to see how far I’ve come🥹. When I first started I took it as a hobby, but then I realized how much passion I had for it. I’ve learned so much, made mistakes, practiced, improved and challenged myself in so many ways. Every single set has taught me something new & every client who has trusted me along the way has played a big part in my journey nothing would be possible without you guys 🫶🏼. I’m so grateful for everyone who has ever booked with me, supported my business, shared my work, recommended me, or even just simply encouraged me. You may not know it but every little bit of support I get means the world to me. Having a small business of my own is something I never imagined I’d have. The little girl in me is so happy and proud of myself and how far I’ve came. Cheers to this and more <3 love you all!🥰 Shoutout to all my girls that have booked with me since day one yall have my heart fr🥰🤍. Again thank you all I’m so excited to see what else God has in store for me 🥹! Photos by 📸: @directedby_randy

I’m not a skater, but I like their aesthetic. Part of that is just being GenX. Checkered Vans are the new New Balance (Dad shoes). I was never coordinated enough to ride an actual skateboard, like the kids in the Goonies, I road my bike everywhere. And I was late to the party listening to the Dead Kennedys, whom I didn’t really discover till after college. But when toward the end of my junior year of high school, I was appointed Editor of our school paper ‘The Shadow,’ I submitted a design for a new masthead that totally copied ‘Thrasher’ magazine. No doubt much to my Journalism Advisor’s chagrin. The compromise did look pretty sweet, even if it wasn’t nearly as edgy. Phoenix in the 80s was a skate Mecca. We practically didn’t need skate parks because concrete and cement were everywhere. Anyway, decades later (about 4, maybe 5 years ago) while teaching students about cut-paper art, I was looking for a subject to challenge myself and hopefully appeal to teenagers. Thus the Santa Cruz skateboarding logo. This screaming zombie hand was designed by Jim Phillips Sr. back in 1973 and was everywhere (mostly stickers, boards, backpacks and t-shirts) both in Phoenix in the 80s and LA in the 90s, where I first started teaching. So it was pretty much seared on my visual/aesthetic subconscious. To me as an artist, it says “let the work speak for itself.” Of course, to me as the square nerd klutz, it also says “oh my god! Here comes the sidewalk! Save the face and head- even if it means the hands break off at the wrist! They can reattach them in the ER!” I’m not a skater, but I like their aesthetic. Randy Carrillo | @directedby_randy is a film director, photographer and artist based in Denison, Iowa. Randy’s work is rooted in identity and storytelling. Randy said, “originally coming from the Los Angeles graffiti scene, my creative foundation was built on movement, rebellion, and capturing moments that often go unseen. Today I’ve transitioned that energy into fine art, photography, and film. Creating work that blends street influence with a more refined, cinematic approach.” 🎥 Randy is also a painter whose focus is on texture, color and emotion while his film work focuses on real life narratives and human behavior. His goal is to leave a lasting impact on the viewer emotionally, and not just visually with his scenes. “Through both mediums, I’m driven by the idea of visualizing real experiences and turning them into something powerful, whether it’s on canvas or on screen. Everything I create is intentional, rooted in where I came from, and pushing towards something bigger,” he said. As someone who enjoys showing human connection and expression in his work, Randy also appreciates that aspect of his creative scene. He said, “what I enjoy most about my creative scene is the authenticity and the people behind it. There is a real sense of hunger, passion, and willingness to create something out of nothing.” Randy values the community the art scene has. “Being a part of something that’s still building gives me the opportunity to not only develop my own work, but help create space for other artists as well,” he said. Randy is committed to continue to help grow the midwest art scene through initiatives like the West Iowa Art Tour and more. Randy is continuing to evolve his work by blending his different passions into one cohesive voice. His long term goals are getting his work in galleries and museums as well as entering film festivals on a larger scale. Any antique photo-philes able to give us any insight into this relic? Atticus told Emma that he believes it's circa the 1920s. The bellows does indicate to me that it's at least pre-1960s, at least 30s-50s if not 20s. She'd like to buy film for it & give it a go. Any advice? It obviously could do with a good vacuuming.

Art Möb's first "Art on Broadway" trip to Denison, IA was pretty cool. First we met @randycarrillo_filmdirector at his studio and learned about his journey from downtown L.A. to Hollywood to Iowa. A lot of the kids love his graffiti/Pop Art style. Next we visited the 'Old Fashioned' where they checked out the dreamlike surrealist landscapes of Salvadoran painter José Luis Gealeno. The Old Fashioned generously treated the kids to non alcoholic "mocktails," during our stay. After lunch we had a chance to do some browsing at an antique store. Finally we were given a tour of @bluespacecreative communications & design studios where their founder Scott Winey told us his story of being an art student in Denison, working as a graphic designer in Omaha and Colorado, being the most n house designer for a business in Ida Grove to celebrating 22 years as a nationally recognized design studio with several international clients. Winey explained how much more brand identity is than just a logo and how important it is for artists, designers and "creatives" to use the creative process to help clients reach their full potential. Students learned about the full spectrum of career possibilities in the visual arts fields, from personal expression, commission work, film making, photography, cinematography, community engagement and enrichment, to advertising, web design, layout, printing, signage, packaging and on and on.
