Before I start posting reviews, I wanted to share how I rate movies. This scale is borrowed from @directedbyadrien and it’s the most honest and accurate scale I’ve found. Every rating is a snapshot of how I feel after watching a movie, so if there’s a movie you think I rated incorrectly, let me know and I’ll give it another try. Drop movies you want me to review in the comments.

I think I picked something up from the tourist bureau… I just liked seeing my name surrounded with gift bags- whether or not they were for me. #film#surpise#reframe#happydelusion#notreallyadelusion

I bought this when @taranacinema filmed a tv pilot called Raymar in 2023. When I drove around @simonrichardboughey @housecoffman @spencerhlevin and @misterbats this ZZ sat next to them. She’s sitting in my backyard now. #raymar #medevil #costumes #halloween #gardening

$892,000 made the film we watched tonight.

Solaris — Tarkovsky, 1972. No franchise, no reshoots, no safety net. Just a director who knew exactly what he wanted and got it on film.

What’s the most expensive-looking cheap movie you’ve ever seen?

This is a refresh of my personal top 10 movies of all time. Have fun.

Carlito’s Way is, for me, one of De Palma’s most beautifully tragic films about fate, redemption, and the impossibility of escaping your own past. Al Pacino gives Carlito this incredible sense of warmth and vulnerability beneath his tough exterior, which makes his inevitable downfall even more heartbreaking. De Palma’s visual style, especially the use of suspense and that extraordinary train-station finale, turns the entire film into a slow-moving tragedy.

Alien is the perfect example of how atmosphere can be more terrifying than showing the monster itself. Ridley Scott transforms the Nostromo into a claustrophobic industrial nightmare, using shadows, production design, sound and silence to create a constant feeling of dread. It is science fiction stripped down to its most primal elements: isolation, survival and the fear of something unknown hunting you in the dark.
It is the better version of Mario Bavas‘ Planet of the Vampires.

Rapid Fire is one of those films I love because it captures Brandon Lee at a moment where you can see just how much potential he had as an action star. His physicality is incredible, but what really makes him compelling is the charisma and vulnerability he brings to Jake Lo. The film has that raw early-90s energy, and its straightforward action style gives the fights a physicality that I find much more satisfying than the overly digital action of modern cinema. And the cinematography of the fights are delicious eye candy!

Once Upon a Time in the West feels less like a Western and more like a cinematic myth being told through images, silence and music. Leone takes his time with faces, landscapes and gestures, allowing every frame to carry enormous weight and tension. Morricone’s score, the monumental compositions and that unforgettable opening sequence make the film feel almost operatic.

John Woo’s The Killer is where action cinema becomes almost operatic in its depiction of violence, loyalty and sacrifice. Chow Yun-fat’s performance gives the film an emotional center, turning what could have been a conventional hitman story
