Like Boba tea, “startup hubs,” man buns, and faith in the two-party political system, the heyday of Durham music festivals undoubtedly peaked somewhere in the mid-to-late 2010s, never to be quite the same again. But while many hallmarks of that boom time—Moogfest, Art of Cool, Beats N Bars, DURM Hip-Hop Summit—are no longer, the tradition has continued in various forms in the years since.

Before its closure last year, Missy Lane’s hosted multiple high-profile, all-day affairs on Main Street (Made In Durham: A Little Brother Block Party in 2023; Missy Lane’s Block Party in 2025); Sylvan Esso put on two different ballpark iterations of what would eventually become Good Moon; and last April, Rhiannon Giddens’ Biscuits & Banjos festival debuted to wide acclaim. Multi-decade standby Bimbé has continued unbowed, despite at least one much-maligned booking fiasco, and Festival for the Eno has carried on, albeit in a scaled-back format this past year.

Still, without a pre-pandemic time machine, it’s hard to remember a slate like the one ahead of us this month: three local-centric downtown music festivals in just three weeks, touching just about every corner of the area’s music scene, from hip-hop and punk to folk, Americana, electronic, and more.

As we approach the most concentrated window of live music in recent Bull City memory, here are a few reasons to make it downtown.
