What a ride. Thank you to @desmoinesmetroopera and @radershie for bringing me out for this production. This rainy, fiery, bacchanal-ey world of King Roger is one I wish I could live in forever.

Thank you to my stellar team of dancers, we couldn’t have done it without you. @anna_pinault , @hey.calv , @alexghaag , @nirvan_singh , @shizuhiga , @sbarrientos . Congrats to the amazing chorus lead by Lisa Hasson, the brilliant principal cast @alexanderbirchelliott (King Roger), @chrisoko7 (The Shephard), @lydiakatarinasoprano (Roxanna), @lvlierop (Edrisi), @benstrongopera (Arch Bishop), and Maggie Shannon (Deconess). This show will hold a special place in my heart for years to come. Thank you to @dancelabny for giving us time and space to develop the movement language of King Roger, it directly lead to the show’s success.

As we close the curtain on our 25–26 season, we are filled with gratitude for everyone who made it possible: our incredible artists, musicians, partners, and most importantly, YOU, our audience.

“As our first full season planned together as Executive and Artistic Directors, this year has felt especially significant.

Our co-production with the FM Symphony was a powerful reminder of what live performance can do - how the music doesn’t just surround you, but lives within you, felt deeply and collectively.

It is remarkable to witness what can happen when artists, musicians, and community come together in this way. I am so grateful we get to share something so wonderful with you.” - Regina Thiel, Executive Director.

From powerful performances to first time collaborations, this season has been one to remember!

Stay tuned… our next season announcement is coming soon, and we can’t wait to share what’s ahead.

Thank you for being part of the Fargo-Moorhead Opera family.

First few weeks in Iowa 🌞 It’s been wonderful getting to know and work with these amazing people. Now we are heading out on a 2 month tour bringing opera to students all over the state! Here we go!

Artist announcement: La Traviata 🌹

Matthew Schulz makes his Fargo-Moorhead Opera debut directing Verdi’s La traviata!

Matthew believes that “the true sign of a successful product is an extraordinary process”—creating a rehearsal environment where artists feel empowered to perform at their highest level. His vision blends respect for operatic tradition with a drive to make the art form fresh, relevant, and deeply human.

Recent projects include Trouble in Tahiti (Annapolis Opera), L’elisir d’amore and Der Kaiser von Atlantis (Butler Opera Center), and collaborations with Wolf Trap Opera and Austin Opera. Beyond the stage, Matthew leads the Reframing American Opera initiative, advocating for inclusivity and expanding the canon with works by women and Latin American composers.

We’re thrilled to have Matthew shaping the drama of Verdi’s timeless masterpiece this season!

✨💃 Who doesn’t love a “Carmen” featuring Merolini?! Matthew J. Schulz (‘22) - @directingmatt - was the Assistant Director, Kevin Miller (‘12) - @kevinmillerpiano - was the Assistant Conductor, and Seth Carico (‘12) - @mephysto42 - slayed the stage as Escamillo in @austinopera’s production of “Carmen” this past month! Congratulations! 💃✨

Well, there goes the summer 🥺

What better way to illustrate the craziness of the Wolf Trap experience than with a summer-wide photo dump? These images capture a small handful of my favorite moments probably ever. I’ve long lost count of how many absolutely incredible people I’ve met, some of which I couldn’t even tag (thank you IG for the 20 person limit 😓). I wish I could caption each image because they all have such unique stories!

The sheer amount of talent, passion, commitment, artist advocacy and straight up kindness I witnessed this summer at @wolftrapopera is truly incomparable and I have never before been more invigorated and artistically inspired! Seeing all of this just reminds me of how thankful I am for this insane industry. It’s a wild ride but an unforgettable one.

I’m so sad for it to be done, but I look forward to encountering all of you superstars in the future. 🥹💕🫡

As this summer at Wolf Trap comes to a close, I’m so grateful for the friends, the memories, the performances, and the lessons I’ve learned here. It’s been such an honor to be here and to learn from the amazing faculty and work with my insanely talented peers. I know we will all cross paths again soon, and I cannot wait. Thank you for the great summer, @wolftrapopera! On to the next adventure! #wolftrap2023
