Another fun year at @isaffcanada doing red carpet interviews and checking out some amazing movies!

As time has gone on this festival has meant so much to me. To see people who look like me telling a range of stories is so inspiring. I love doing the red carpet interviews because I enjoy hearing about people’s journey in filmmaking and their enthusiasm. Organizing a festival is not easy and in this economy that adds a whole new challenge. I truly commend the entire iSAFF team for their dedication and passion. Platforms like this show folks in our community that our stories matter and platforms like this inspire the next generation.

I checked out two films that really had an impact on me all to do with the subject of sports, which if you know me I LOVE a good sports documentary. The first Crowned Athletes, directed by Prabhjit Singh Sabharwal the premise is four accomplished Sikh athletes from British Columbia and Ontario reflect on the meaning of the turban, cultural expectations and the courage to stay rooted in identity. The film made me go through a series of emotions. From beginning to the end I was hooked. @directingprabh you’re so talented and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future!

The other @hooplikethis traces the rise of the world’s first professional Indian basketball team, where 12 players risk their careers, reputation, and identity to redefine who belongs in the game. As a kid who grew up playing basketball I always wondered why there was such a lack of South Asian representation in this particular sport. So many kids watch and play the sport, yet so few of us are in the space. This documentary gives you an understanding as to why this is the case. The way the story is told is just brilliant. It was stressful to watch, but in such a good way.

Big thank you to one of the producers @pulkitdatta for bringing this film to my attention. And director @shubhidobopop you did a phenomenal job with this one. Keep this film on your radar!

Both these films have a beautiful message which says YES WE DO BELONG. I felt so seen and heard thank you iSAFF and all the filmmakers for inspiring so many of us for the last 16 years.

A Sikh athlete. A turban. World-class performance.

That’s the story behind Crowned Athletes — a powerful short documentary about Sikh identity, athletic achievement, representation, and the courage to challenge expectations.
