The shovel is not Comrade Lenin… ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Alina Konon revolves her show around her childhood under the Soviet Union, starting with the stark reality that neither the Soviet Union nor the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic exists anymore.

The tragedies that marked it, however, are still very clear in the common imagination, from political imprisonment and Chornobyl to a government that lies and hides from its people.

She draws on these episodes from arguably one of the darkest pages of human history, presenting them as a narration made up of quick, witty sketches, turning a harsh and truthful account into a cathartic space to process personal trauma.

Relatable, existentially deep - and hilarious… ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Broke & Fabulous in the 21st Century strikes a universal chord: that feeling shared by most millennials in their 30s of being endlessly torn between big ambitions and a life that spirals out of control.

It’s a story of friendship between Alex and Petunia, who keep promising each other they’ll spend more time together and hold on to one another as the raft of adulthood swings them back and forth. At the same time, everyone around them seems to have more direction.

A beautifully written and aesthetically pleasing piece that manages to make you feel less lonely while you try to ‘work it out’.

That age-old relationship between artists and reviewers... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

@adohertycomedy is unafraid to challenge the flaws and bias of British journalism through the clueless and asinine guise of a public school-educated man, born into a family of editors, unashamed to flaunt his nepotism.

His third Fringe outing is intelligent satire masked as a ghost story, one in which he has summoned a devil to punish all reviewers - and features everything Doherty does best.

A bad review? We can’t believe it’s true... 😿

@adohertycomedy is bringing his Scottish audience ‘Reviewers Welcome... TO DIE!’, a new Fringe hit inspired by a Victorian ghost story.

After two hysterical performances, he hits the stage again with this hilarious and spooky one-man show.

We met him ahead of his third Fringe run to chat about the festival, his creative process and horror movies.

SNACK: What is the concept behind the show, and what inspired that specific title?

AD: The idea is to mock this actor who is so upset about a review that he’s made a show about how awful reviewers are. There are a few jabs at reviewers, but overall the joke is meant to be on him.

SNACK: This person lurks in the audience, then goes home and might give you an incredibly bad review.

AD: Have you ever read a two-star review of a film and as you read it, you feel like you would enjoy it? There is still value to a bad review. But it can feel like a two-star review could make you reconsider the entire show.

SN: What is your writing process?

AD: My shows are like plays. This year’s show started as a ghost story.

There was also a bit about the snobbery of academia, but that didn’t make the final cut. I’m also a big believer in getting something down on the page, regardless of whether it’s good. You have to get it down, and only then you start making it better.

@culturewars dropped a new album!

Don’t Speak, the first and titular song, sets the tone for the entire album, providing musical and thematic context: it frames it perfectly in that 2010s garage rock-vibe that is having a revival just now, and explores the pain that comes from unrequited love and the end of a relationship.
