🌳✨ Tree Talk Arbor Society ✨🌳 Last week we had the absolute privilege of working on some very special trees 🌿 First up: a true legend 🌟 We pruned a registered Portland Heritage Tree that also holds the title of the northernmost Canyon Live Oak in the United States. Planted roughly 100 years ago, this beauty has developed a wide, sprawling structure that’s classic for its species—especially impressive given how far north it’s growing. A real reminder that trees love to surprise us 🌱 We also took care of a row of American Elm, which always comes with extra responsibility. Elms require strict pruning protocols to help prevent the spread of Dutch elm disease. 🦠 Tree Health Tip: Dutch elm disease is caused by a fungal infection (Ophiostoma species) that’s spread primarily by Elm bark beetles and a fungus they carry. Once inside the tree, the fungus blocks the vascular system—the “plumbing” that moves water and nutrients. As a result, leaves wilt, branches die back, and without proper management, the tree can decline rapidly. Careful timing, clean tools, and proper technique are key to keeping these iconic trees thriving 🌳 Honored to help preserve living history and keep our urban forest healthy—one branch at a time 💪🌲 #TreeTalkArborSociety #HeritageTrees #CanyonLiveOak #AmericanElm #DutchElmDisease #TreeCare #ArboristLife #UrbanForest #TreeNerds

Failed Box Elder ‘Acer negundo’ Our long time client had a tree fail at their property in South East Portland fail at what is called a ‘Bark Included Union’. This is when two leads grow from a very narrow attachment point and as they develop, put more and more pressure against each other. Add the effects of more and more weight developing as the leads extend and grow heavier, and it’s just a matter of time until they fail. No equipment access, but luckily enough structural integrity to work some magic with our specialized tools of the trade. This client waited less than 24 hours before we were able to shift the schedule and accommodate them. The signs of a Bark Included Union or ‘Bark Inclusion’ are protruded ‘seams’ where the two stems meet, a clearly defined crevice leading down from where the stems separate and often times discoloration that seems to leak down the crevice. These types of unions are easily identifiable with varying amounts of risk involved. Give us a call today for a free consult to inspect your trees for all kinds of defects to keep you and your property safe! Tree Talk Arbor 503.521.6573 #arboristsofinstagram #treecare #hazardtree
