Posted @withregram • @discover.explore.enjoy Another hike, another Adventure Friday. Literally it was an adventure! Despite having the AllTrails app open the entire time while hiking the Charlies Lake Loop in the Birch Cove Wilderness Area, I managed to veer off track a few times. It took a very steep climb up the side of a cliff, and a bush whacking job down another hill to get back on track! Wendy had never been to this wilderness area before, and wanted to know why the trail wasn’t marked. I said “because it’s a true wilderness trail”. I wouldn’t recommend navigating it without a map.

As always, Wendy never knows what she is getting into when I pick the day’s adventure. 😆

Maddox, Bailey, and Samuel were real troopers on this moderately difficult 4km , two hour trek.

Blue Mountain - Birch Cove Lakes Wilderness Area is a 1,782 hectare (ha) wilderness at the edge of urban Halifax, between Bayers Lake Business Park, Kingswood and Tantallon. It is about the size of Halifax Peninsula.

Can’t wait until next Friday to see what adventure Wendy chooses.

#WildlifeWednesday featuring incredible photos from photographer Marleigh Leaman, Explore, Discover, Enjoy

Photo 1: The Cape Forchu lighthouse, originally built in 1840, was only the 2nd lighthouse in Nova Scotia with a revolving white flashing light to distinguish it from others. In 1962, at the age of 122 years, the old tower was torn down and replaced with a 75 ft octagonal concrete tower with its distinctive wind resistant apple core shape.

Photo 2: Ruby-throated Hummingbird. A hummingbird’s tongue can stick out as far as its bill is long. The bird dips its long, forked tongue lined with hair-like extensions called lamellae into a nectar-rich flower. The tongue flicks in and out of the bill, up to 12 times a second.

Photo 3: Shubenacadie Canal, in Shubie Park, NS. Mallards fly in and land on the ice.

Photo 4: Lamanche Hiking Trail, NFLD

Posted @withregram • @discover.explore.enjoy Another day, another hike with Wendy. Access to the Middle Head Trail is right at the Keltic Lodge where we are attending a Night Photography conference.

The trail follows a long, narrow peninsula separating two ocean bays, ending on headland cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Smokey and Ingonish Island.

The 6.1km trail has two loops and is rated as moderate in intensity. Trail rehabilitation is ongoing due to coastal erosion.

Meet the Black-backed Woodpecker, basically Woody's much cooler brother 😎

"Best known as specialists foraging in fire ravaged forests, the male can be identified by its yellow patch on top of its head."
