A day filled with fluff! 🐼🐋🐧🐯

The best of it all, they all located in the same island and its proximity. A perfect destination for little ones (and overjoyed adults like me too).

An Emperor’s Second Chance

(Obverse and Reverse) 1-Fen coin from the former Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo under the rule of Emperor Puyi. Minted 1937.

In 1931, Japanese forces occupied the Chinese region of Manchuria after staging a false-flag railway bombing known as the Mukden Incident. With its abundant natural resources (coal, iron, oil shale, and aluminum) vital to Japan’s rising economy, Manchuria was a lucrative target. In order to legitimize this takeover, Japan proclaimed Manchukuo as an independent state in March 1932, though it essentially remained under Japanese control. Puyi, the last Emperor of China until his overthrow in 1912, was made Chief Executive of the new state, and then its Emperor in 1934. Few countries ever recognized Manchukuo’s independence, and the League of Nations’ repudiation of Japan’s actions there caused its withdrawal from the body in 1933. Heavy Japanese immigration and investment followed, making Manchukuo considerably more industrialized than the rest of China, although this came at a steep cost to the local population. Land was appropriated, farmers were displaced, Chinese labor was heavily and cruelly exploited, and any dissent was brutally crushed. Given its strategic location, Manchukuo became extremely militarized, although the Japanese defeat in the 1939 Battle of Khalkhin Gol against the Soviet Union would dissuade Japan to avoid any major war against the Soviets. It did, however, become a base of operations and material support for the Second Sino-Japanese War, which began in 1937. A notorious aspect of its wartime history was the Unit 731 biological warfare research facility near Harbin, where horrific human experimentation was conducted by the Japanese on captive Chinese civilians. On August 8, 1945, the Soviet Union entered the Pacific War and invaded Manchuria, bringing an end to the existence of Manchukuo by August 18.
