When water meets wind ..
.
.
Some waterfalls are beautiful when the sun is shining. Others become even more spectacular when the weather turns wild. This is Fossá, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the Faroe Islands, located on the island of Streymoy, not far from the village of Haldórsvík. With a total height of around 140 metres, Fossá is the tallest waterfall in the Faroe Islands. Its name simply means “river with waterfalls” in Faroese, and it tumbles down the mountainside in two main stages before continuing towards the sea. The surrounding cliffs are made of ancient basalt, formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The distinctive horizontal layers are clearly visible in the rock face, providing a spectacular backdrop to the falling water. During my recent visit, persistent heavy rain had turned Fossá into an enormous cascade. Strong winds were pushing the water sideways, creating clouds of spray and making the waterfall look almost as if it was moving in different directions at once. The combination of rain, wind and slippery rocks makes getting close particularly challenging, but it also shows just how powerful the North Atlantic weather can be. Would you brave the rain and wind to see Fossá like this, or would you rather visit on a calmer day? Fossa Waterfall, Streymoy, Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 ….

A little piece of Scotland in the Faroe Islands ..
.
.
You would normally expect to see these beautiful, shaggy Highland cattle roaming the Scottish Highlands. But apparently, they feel just as much at home in the Faroe Islands! During my recent trip to the islands, this young Highland cow was enjoying a meal, surrounded by the rolling hills and rugged landscape that make the Faroes so special. Highland cattle are one of Scotland’s oldest and most recognisable cattle breeds. Their long, thick coats, distinctive horns and rather impressive hairstyles make them easy to recognise. But that famous hairstyle is not just for looks. Their double coat consists of a soft, insulating undercoat and longer outer hairs that help protect them from rain, wind and cold temperatures. It is a particularly useful adaptation in the North Atlantic, where the weather can be rather unpredictable. Highland cattle are also remarkably hardy animals, able to graze on rough vegetation in places where many other cattle breeds would struggle. That makes them well suited to the open, windswept landscapes of the Faroe Islands. And while the adults are impressive enough, I think the younger ones are particularly photogenic. Just look at that fluffy coat. Are you a fan of Highland cattle, or do you prefer the more traditional black-and-white cows? Traelanipa, Vagar, Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 ….

Sundays are for Churches ..
.
.
For this week’s Sundays are for Churches, we’re travelling to the tiny village of Húsar on Kalsoy, one of the most beautiful and remote islands in the Faroe Islands. Overlooking the water, Húsar Church is a wonderful example of the simple but colourful architecture found throughout the islands. Its white walls, bright red roof and tall pointed steeple stand out beautifully against the green mountains and the deep blue sea. The present church dates from 1920 and serves a village with only a small number of residents. Like many Faroese churches, it reflects the importance of Christianity in communities where fishing, farming and the unpredictable North Atlantic weather have shaped everyday life for centuries. Most Faroese people traditionally belong to the Lutheran Church, and churches like this one have long been important gathering places for baptisms, weddings, funerals and Sunday services. What makes Húsar particularly special is its setting. The mountains rise steeply behind the village, while the church stands beside the narrow road following the coastline. It is difficult to imagine a more impressive backdrop for such a modest building. Today’s Bach cantata is “Wo soll ich fliehen hin“, BWV5. Husar, Kalsoy, Faroe Islands 🇫🇴 ….

The road to Saksun ..
.
.
There are roads that take you from one place to another, and then there are roads like this one, leading into the heart of the Faroese landscape. This is the remote road to Saksun, a tiny village on the island of Streymoy, tucked away at the end of the beautiful Saksunardalur valley. Just before the storm arrived, the dark clouds were gathering above the enormous mountain slopes, while small waterfalls were already visible on the distant cliffs. Saksun is one of the most remarkable villages in the Faroe Islands. It sits in a natural amphitheatre of mountains, overlooking Pollurin, a tidal lagoon that was once a natural harbour. A powerful storm in 1602 blocked its entrance with sand, changing the landscape forever. The village is also home to a historic stone church, built in 1858, and the old farm of Dúvugarðar, where visitors can learn more about traditional Faroese farming life. The road through the valley is narrow, with mountains rising steeply on both sides. It is a landscape shaped by glaciers, rain and wind, where the weather can change in a matter of minutes.
