You have never actually touched anything in your entire life. 🤯

Think about the last time you hugged a friend, typed on your phone, or held a cup of coffee. It felt real, right? But at the microscopic level, you were actually floating a tiny fraction of a millimeter above them.

The image above shows an ultra-close look at an index finger and a thumb trying to pinch together. Even when it feels like they are making contact, they are still separated by a measurable gap of 938 micrometers—nearly a full millimeter of empty space!

So, what is actually happening?

The Atomic Barrier: Every single object is made of atoms. Surrounding every atom is a cloud of negatively charged electrons.

The Repulsion Force: Basic physics tells us that like charges repel. When you press your fingers together, the electrons in one finger push against the electrons in the other.

The Illusion of Touch: That physical sensation of resistance you feel isn't solid objects colliding. It is your nerve endings detecting the electromagnetic repulsion between atomic fields.

If your atoms were to truly touch without this force field, their nuclei would smash together, causing a chemical bond or a nuclear reaction.

You aren't touching the world—you are hovering over it, riding on a wave of pure physics.

A lot can happen in the blink of an eye — even across the universe. While your eyelids close for a fraction of a second, the cosmos continues its enormous, almost unimaginable processes.

Stars are born and die. Inside vast clouds of gas and dust, gravity pulls matter together until new stars begin to form. Meanwhile, massive stars reach the ends of their lives and can explode as supernovae, releasing enormous amounts of energy and scattering elements into space.

The Sun is constantly converting mass into energy. At its core, nuclear fusion combines hydrogen nuclei to form helium, releasing the energy that eventually reaches Earth as sunlight. The Sun processes hundreds of millions of tonnes of hydrogen every second, illustrating just how powerful this process is.

The universe is expanding. On the largest scales, space itself stretches, increasing the distances between sufficiently distant galaxies. This expansion is happening continuously, even during the brief moment it takes you to blink.

And then there is light. Travelling at approximately 299,792 kilometres per second in a vacuum, light can cover nearly 60,000 kilometres in just 0.2 seconds — enough to travel around Earth roughly one and a half times.

Think about that: in the time it takes to blink, light can cross an enormous distance, stars can evolve, and the universe continues its grand cosmic story. These processes occur on vastly different scales, but they are all unfolding while we go about our lives.

The exact numbers shown in the video are estimates, and some depend on the assumptions used. The universe's expansion, in particular, cannot be described as a single fixed distance added everywhere.

The next time you blink, remember: the universe never pauses.
