🫒🧠 CAN THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET HELP MENTAL HEALTH?

A major systematic review suggests the answer may be yes — but diet is one piece of a much bigger mental-health picture.

Researchers reviewed 104 studies examining Mediterranean-style eating and mental health in adults. Greater adherence was associated with:

🧠 Fewer depressive symptoms
💚 Fewer anxiety symptoms
⚡ Lower perceived stress
🌿 Better psychological wellbeing
✨ Improved quality of life

So how could food influence the brain?

The Mediterranean dietary pattern is rich in vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, fish and extra-virgin olive oil. Together, these foods may influence several interconnected pathways:

🔥 Inflammation — potentially reducing chronic low-grade inflammatory signalling
🛡️ Oxidative stress — antioxidants and polyphenols may help protect cells
🦠 Gut–brain axis — fibre supports the microbiome and its signalling to the brain
🩸 Metabolic health — improved glucose regulation and insulin sensitivity
❤️ Vascular health — supporting cerebral blood flow
🧬 Neurotransmitter biology — supplying nutrients involved in serotonin, dopamine and GABA pathways

Importantly, most of the evidence is still observational. Association does not prove that the Mediterranean diet directly prevents or treats mental illness. More high-quality, long-term clinical trials are needed.

Earlier clinical trials including SMILES and HELFIMED also provide evidence that structured dietary improvement can reduce depressive symptoms in some people, supporting further investigation of nutritional psychiatry as an adjunct to—not a replacement for—standard mental-health care.

The takeaway:

🤝 Keep the whole biopsychosocial picture in view.

One of my favorite weeks of the year is officially here! There’s something so special about coming together for the Mindshare Summit with my dear friend @jj.virgin and so many brilliant friends, colleagues, and changemakers in this space.

And of course, getting to experience it all with my bestie makes it even better. 💕

We’ve already squeezed in a little exploring, some ocean, lots of laughs, and — because I can’t help myself — some serious nerding out with the incredible minds behind @discovermescreen and the future of mitochondrial health. 🧬⚡️

These are the moments I love most: connecting, learning, sharing ideas, and being surrounded by people who are just as passionate about changing the future of health as I am!

🧬🏃‍♂️ EXERCISE DOESN’T JUST BURN CALORIES — IT MAY HELP REBUILD AGING MITOCHONDRIA.

A 2026 iScience review examined how exercise influences mitochondrial health across some of our most energy-demanding organs — the brain, heart, skeletal muscle, liver and kidneys.

Why does this matter for mental health? 🧠

Your brain has enormous energy demands. When mitochondrial efficiency declines, cells may face:
⚡ less efficient ATP production
🔥 greater oxidative stress
🧠 more inflammatory signalling
📉 reduced cellular resilience and function

Exercise appears to activate several mitochondrial maintenance pathways, including:

🧬 AMPK → SIRT1 → PGC-1α → mitochondrial biogenesis
♻️ Mitophagy → removal of damaged mitochondria
🔄 Fusion + fission → mitochondrial quality control
🛡️ NRF2 signalling → stronger antioxidant defence
🔥 ↓ excessive ROS and inflammatory signalling

The potential result? Healthier cellular energy systems, greater resilience and better support for brain function as we age.

And you don’t need perfection.

Start with:
🚶 brisk walking
🏊 swimming or cycling
🏋️ strength training 2× weekly
⏱️ short movement “snacks” during the day
😴 adequate sleep + recovery
🥗 sufficient protein and nutrient-dense food

Current guidelines suggest approximately 150–300 minutes of moderate activity per week, or 75–150 minutes vigorous, alongside resistance training.

Important: this paper is a review of biological mechanisms, not evidence that exercise alone treats depression, anxiety or another psychiatric disorder. But it strengthens the growing picture that brain health and mitochondrial health are deeply connected.

14 years of training. Pilates, strength work, the whole routine - the kind of consistency most people don’t have the discipline for. His mescore said his mitochondria didn’t agree.

In 2015 NASA sent one identical twin astronaut to the International Space Station for 340 days. His twin stayed on Earth.

What they found over 25 months of monitoring changed how we understand human biology.

Dr. Hemal Patel’s lab was one of the lead research teams responsible for assessing mitochondrial function in this study.

Here is what stood out.
→ Mitochondrial RNA levels increased the longer the mission went on. The cellular energy systems were under sustained demand unlike anything seen on Earth.

→ Spare reserve capacity decreased. The buffer your cells use to respond to additional stress was being depleted.

→ The body shifted toward anaerobic metabolism. A less efficient energy pathway. Lactic acid levels rose significantly.

→ Telomeres lengthened during flight then shortened rapidly within 48 hours of return alongside a major spike in inflammation.

→ Gene expression was almost 6 times more disrupted in the second half of the mission than the first. 811 genes remained disrupted 6 months after landing.

The lesson is not that space is dangerous. It is that extreme stress accelerates what chronic everyday stress does to your cells over years.

The mitochondria are always at the center of it.
