The Bronx tells its story through its people, its culture, and its walls. 🎨

“We Are The Bronx” is a major public art initiative celebrating the identity, creativity, and cultural diversity of the South Bronx. Unveiled in September 2025 in The Hub, the project brought three vibrant community murals to Third Avenue—transforming the heart of one of the borough’s most iconic commercial districts into a canvas for Bronx pride.

At the center of the initiative is “We Are The Bronx,” designed by acclaimed Dominican muralist Angurria (Omar García), whose work brings together recognizable figures, cultural symbols, and imagery reflecting the communities that have helped shape the borough.

The project was developed through a collaboration between the Third Avenue BID and FOGA , led by Fernando Ortiz, with support from the Bronx Economic Development Corporation (BXEDC) and funding through New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Together with “Rose From Concrete” by Huetek and “Roots of The Bronx” by Gabriel Castillo and Danny Peguero, the murals are more than public art—they are a celebration of place, memory, culture, and the communities that proudly say: We Are The Bronx.

On this day fifteen years ago, Word Up opened in under four days with the support of many of our neighbors. At first, it was an empty storefront bearing the awning of a pharmacy and only intended to be open for one month. That first month, we were open 5 hours a day and sometimes would have 3 different events, and the people wanted more! Then in 2013, we moved to our current location and slowly kept adding to it. Now we have a second shop @recirculation.nyc, host a community fridge and host weekly free breakfasts, and put on an annual large events for kids, adults, and music lovers.

Help us raise $15k to repair and revamp our community spaces — our bathrooms need some love, and we want to provide an ADA-compliant ramp to Recirculation. LINK IN BIO to donate :)

HERE’S TO ANOTHER FIFTEEN YEARS ❤️
