🚲 Meet Melissa from Arkansas🚲

Not everything we encounter as Gravel Bandits is big. It’s about the small things too, like cleat boots, which can literally change someone’s ride!

“Hey sir, how far are y’all riding this morning?”

Me - “Well, planning on 300 miles.”

“That’s….. uh… a lot further than I thought you were going to say”

That was my favorite interaction of the event as I was talking to a random old man at a gas station early in the route.

The @midsouthgravel Mega Mid South was a pretty insane experience and so much harder than I thought it was going to be. After doing unbound 200 earlier this year, I thought MMS wouldn’t be too much harder, but I was wrong. The constant washboard, rutted out roads, and riding through the night really wore me down. Luckily my game plan of sticking myself to a group worked out really well. @hannah.glatter , @ryanobe4 , and @jessmariie01 let me join their big group until it widdled itself down to the 4 of us. This ride felt so much like an adventure, meeting and talking to new people, resupplying and eating wherever possible, and constantly planning logistics throughout the ride. This was without a doubt one of the hardest things I have ever done physically and mentally, but I already can’t wait to do it again. Thank you so much to @unlearnpavement @painpatina and @districtbicycles for putting on this amazing event and thank you so much to @corina_dinathon for putting up with all my shit and letting me do stuff like this!

We’re doing a nice chill 12 mile route tonight. South on Husband to 68th, then over the Washington to head back downtown. We’ll hang out at Stonecloud and hear some harrowing tales from some of our Mega MidSouth riders. This one will be killer, we’ve got unbelievable weather to ride in, LFG!! 🚲🍻❤️

300 miles of gravel, and a little dot on a map that refused to stop moving.

Second time heading to Stillwater,Ok. to take on @midsouthgravel the 300 mile version. Apparently, once wasn’t enough to learn my lesson.

I had unfinished business from last year, and I really wanted to get this one done.

Did I doubt myself? Absolutely.

There were moments when my legs were done, and I genuinely wondered why I voluntarily signed up for this.

But something pretty cool happened.

My friends and family were back home, checking Trackleaders, watching my little dot crawl across Oklahoma, and sending texts cheering me on.

And honestly? That meant more than I expected.

The last year I spent so much time learning about training, gear, nutrition, and all the physical stuff that goes into riding. But nobody talks enough about how much it matters to have people in your corner when your brain starts telling you to quit.

Sometimes a simple text from someone who believes in you hits harder than another energy gel. And tastes significantly better, too.

Somehow, between all the suffering, laughing with friends, meeting new people, and eating enough junk food to depreciate the real state value of a gas station bathroom, I made it.

300 freaking miles. Done.

A goal I set a year ago. A finish I wasn’t always sure I could pull off.

And the funny thing is, when I look back, I don’t think the miles or the suffering will be what I remember most.

It’ll be the people.

The friends I shared the road with, the strangers who became friends, and everyone back home cheering for a tiny moving dot on a screen.

Turns out ultras aren’t always about how far you can push yourself. Sometimes it’s about how many people help you keep going without even being there.

My legs did the pedaling, but I definitely didn’t do this alone.

Would I do it again?

Ask me when I can sit on a bike saddle without making noises. Till the next one 🤙🏼

Mega @midsouthgravel 300, finally completed.
34:44 elapsed, 23:09 Moving

Came back physically stronger than ever to avenge last year’s DNF.

Unfortunately, 2 elements outside of my control — sleep deprivation and freezing temps — broke me again this year.

Fortunately, the gravel gods placed a man named Keith Smith @gottalovegravel in my path and after a chat, I was mentally re-ignited and found my way out of the DNF chamber.

Here are some clips from my little jaunt, and a novel at the end about how it all went down.

Thanks for listening.

Mega Mid South ✅

I had an amazing time riding 300 miles of Oklahoma’s best roads. So much beauty, so many great people, and an endless amount of gratitude to everyone involved, from the race organizers to the friends and family that cheered me on. The DFL party at the finish was the perfect end to a great trip thanks to everyone that was available to be there! Video footage to come later but in the meantime I’ll be getting some much needed sleep in my own bed.

This is a long one so buckle up lol 😂.

300mi was the goal but I unfortunately scratched at mile 166, 3:30am in Perry Oklahoma. After talking with @diversifiedcycling, I think I put on too many layers in Guthrie before the night push, trapping in sweat and freezing me out, high humidity and 38-40 degrees didn’t help this problem. It was nearly impossible for me to get warm and stay warm, every stop and start again was miserable because I just couldn’t keep any core temperature in, no matter what I did. Got to the Loves in Perry and after spending what felt like forever, just constantly shaking, I pulled the plug and ended my ride there. The first time I have EVER bailed from a race. We had an AMAZING crew and spent 19hrs straight riding the best roads that Payne County has to offer with @unlearnpavement and the gang.

But not all is lost! I probably went to sleep around 4am, but I knew meaningful sleep wasn’t gonna happen so I decided to not let the day to go waste, pounded a redbull and hopped in the van with @point.be to post up and dot chase the other riders. It was awesome! Spent the rest of the day at @districtbicycles with everyone else just having a party at the finish line and cheering on finishers!

Monday we more or less did the same thing, hung out, had a few beers, and cheered on those still crushing the 300 mile course! Wrapped up with a coveted burger from Bobby and rolled it back home to Little Rock. All in all it was still an 11/10 weekend all things considered. Bike was absolutely dialed, legs felt amazing, food was in point. But lessons learned, tips and tricks put in the back pocket for now. I’ll be back very soon Stillwater!
