I spent years in Olympic lifting and CrossFit. Loved it. Competed, coached it, built a gym around it.

To be clear, I never fully stopped. I still lift and still do CrossFit. But it stopped being the only thing, and that shift didn’t happen by choice at first.

The first road bump was an injury. Nothing catastrophic, but it forced me to look at how my training was affecting recovery.

Then my kids came along, and that changed everything again.

Heavy strength training has a real recovery cost. With less sleep and less time, I wasn’t bouncing back the way I used to. I was training hard but constantly turning up tired and flat, carrying a recovery debt I wasn’t paying off.

I’m also not someone who does well sitting still. Training gives me a buzz that carries into the rest of my day. So I needed a better trade-off.

Conditioning and running gave me that.

I could train more frequently without the same recovery cost. And running gave me something lifting couldn’t at that point: loads of room to improve.

I was new enough that I could see progress constantly. Watching numbers move and feeling myself get better gave me a completely different kind of fulfilment.

Now the kids are a bit older, sleep is better and recovery isn’t the fight it was. And I can feel the urge creeping back in to push the lifting harder again.

There was never one big decision to quit anything.

It was recovery, then frequency, then progress. The trade-off changed, so my training changed with it.

And now the balance might be shifting again.

Fulfilment isn’t fixed.

What lights you up at one stage of life might not do the same forever. That’s not failure. It’s just change.

The skill isn’t finding one thing and sticking with it no matter what.

It’s being honest enough to notice when the trade-off has shifted, and confident enough to follow what works for where you are now.
