Procedural Justice & Police Legitimacy | Detroit
Northwest Community Center

Today wasn’t about pretending the relationship between police and community is perfect.

It was about doing the work required to make it better.

The Detroit Police Department’s Westside Precincts brought officers, command staff and residents together for honest conversations about something I’ve named Police TAR: transparency, accountability and restoration.

Officers who acknowledged making poor decisions spoke openly about how their actions affected the people they serve—and how those experiences changed them. Residents were also placed in real-world simulations, making split-second decisions and navigating situations like domestic disputes to better understand what officers encounter every day.

There were difficult conversations. There were questions. There was listening.

No, decades of mistrust weren’t erased in one afternoon.

But something happened in that room.

People walked out understanding one another a little better than when they walked in.

Sir Robert Peel’s foundational philosophy reminds us that “the police are the public and the public are the police.”

Today, color didn’t matter. Rank didn’t matter. What mattered was community.

Because trust isn’t built through slogans or lip service. It’s built when people are willing to sit across from one another, tell the truth, listen, accept accountability—and still choose to move forward together.

Today wasn’t the finish line.

It was a bridge.

Photography and video were prohibited due to sensitive nature of topics. I appreciate the confidence of Assistant Chief Eric A. Ewing, Sergeant Justin Hearn, and the Department in me to capture this with no slant for either citizens or law enforcement.
