No, I am not performing as a Witch in my production of Macbeth. And yet, every time I work with these witches and Hecate , I feel strangely drawn towards them. Why? Perhaps because I have always been fascinated by the elemental energy of the Witch—the ancient, mysterious force that exists beyond our rational understanding. In Macbeth, I don't see the Witches simply as evil figures. I see them as beings connected to nature, time, destiny, intuition and the unseen forces that surround human existence. History has often portrayed the Witch as something dark, dangerous and negative. Women who possessed knowledge of herbs, healing, nature, the body, the cycles of the moon, or simply refused to conform were often feared and labelled. But what if we look at the Witch differently? What if the Witch is the keeper of forbidden knowledge? They listen to nature. They understand energies. They see what others cannot see. That is what fascinates me about white magic—not magic as manipulation, but magic as an engagement with nature, intention, intuition and the unseen. While directing the Witches of Macbeth, I don't want them to be merely sinister characters standing on the margins of the story. I want them to carry an elemental presence—something ancient, almost primordial. They are the voices of a world where human beings are not separate from nature, fate and the mysterious forces of existence. Perhaps that is why I feel so close to them. I am not playing the Witch. But somewhere in the rehearsal room, I feel her. And perhaps every artist, at some point, has to enter that mysterious space where logic ends and imagination begins. @shwetabagchimukherjee @raktimgoswami @diyagb

There are moments in life that feel impossible to imagine when you are awake through anxious nights, carrying uncertainty and making difficult decisions about your future. I often think about the journey—from being a school teacher to finding my roots in art, community, and storytelling. The path has been shaped by risk, friendship, care, and the courage to leave behind what no longer allowed me to grow. None of this happened alone. My queer and non queer comrades held me through moments of doubt and celebrated every step forward. They taught me that growth is never an individual achievement; it is always collective. A meaningful part of this journey was being nominated by Nandini Moitra through Fearless Collective, which opened doors to conversations and collaborations with incredible artists, activists, and dreamers from across the world. More recently, I had the privilege of working alongside Karnikabai, Nandini Moitra, Aravani Arts Project, Fearless Collective, and Crafts Council of West Bengal at Artisana to create a mural centering craft, dignity, memory, resistance, and transgender lives. Seeing this work thoughtfully covered by the writer, Queer Comrade and journalist Sandip Roy in Mint feels deeply special. Thank you for looking beyond the surface and engaging with the larger conversations around queerness, labour, visibility, and community care. Every artwork carries many hands, many stories, and many acts of love. This recognition belongs to all of us. ❤️🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈✨
