VOICES OF KIN
NOW THIS is...... Where Culture Creates Connection

☆NOT AI CONENT!! ARTWORK BY SELENA FURNARI☆

TEN DAYS. OVER 100 ARTISTS. ONE INCREDIBLE CELEBRATION.
Voices of Kin is a ten-day celebration of music, creativity and human connection, bringing together artists, communities and audiences through the universal language of shared experience.

At its heart, Voices of Kin is about creating space for people's voices to be heard, shared and cultures to be celebrated. Through live music, dance, visual arts, workshops, conversation and performance, the festival invites us to learn from one another and recognise the threads that connect us all.

With a First Nations artists led program and grounded in respect for Country, the festival honours the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which we gather- the Gimuy Walubara Yidinji people. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded.

Across ten inspiring days, more than 100 musicians, artists, dancers, performers and facilitators will share their creativity, knowledge and lived experiences. Together they weave a rich tapestry of culture, identity and belonging that reflects both the diversity of our community and the values that unite us.

Proudly supported by the Queensland Government's Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Voices of Kin celebrates creativity as a bridge between people. It is an invitation to gather with open hearts, honour the stories that have come before us, embrace those being shared today, and create new connections that strengthen our community for generations to come.

We have an amazing line up featuring storytelling with Elders, live music, performance art, workshops, exhibitions, film screenings, community BBQs and so much more.

Fearless returned to JUTE for a five-day creative development, culminating in a public showcase and post-show Q&A last Friday. The showing was incredibly well received, with audiences responding strongly to the story, characters and relationships, and many saying the work prompted them to think more deeply about its themes. Thanks to everyone who joined us, shared their thoughts and helped shape the next stage of the work.

There’s something really special about being trusted to help bring someone’s story to life.

This week I had the absolute privilege of directing the creative development of FEARLESS, a new play by the incredible @dizzydoolan .

Dizzy is a fierce and formidable hip-hop artist who has been carving her path for decades, and this story is deeply personal, about her family, her history and the worlds that have shaped her. To be trusted with that vision, even for one short week, was a real honour.

Our time together was about getting the script on its feet and giving Dizzy the opportunity to hear, see and feel the work live. And what a gift that room was. Taeg, Aunty Roxanne, Tibian and Jalen brought not only their immense talent as actors but also gifted such generosity, curiosity and brilliant creative thinking to tweaking the script.

It was also such a joy to work alongside Patty Priest, crafting the sound and visual world and finding ways to weave the soundscapes seamlessly through Dizzy’s hip-hop tracks.

Thank you Chris Kohn for your dramaturgical wisdom, and the whole JUTE team for inviting me into this process and trusting me to work alongside Dizzy.

And a huge thank you to my own mentor, Courtney Stewart, for your guidance and support along the way too. ❤️ @corkycats

And most beautifully, FEARLESS is a project that Busty had been part of in its earlier development. So to walk into that room and feel her presence there with us felt really special.

Feeling very grateful to have been part of this chapter. ❤️ keep your eyes peeled for when we continue developing this work.

Director: Lisa Fa’alafi
Dramaturg and Jute Theatre Executive Artistic Director: Chris Kohn

Thanks Dizzy xxxx
