As we launch into this new chapter, we want to highlight the incredible contributions of our dear friend, co-divo, and co-founder, Rory Behrens! Over the past 7 years, Rory has been a cornerstone of our organization, always providing creative input. As our Technical Director, Emcee, and creator and stage director of our 10 Minute Opera Festival, his contributions have been invaluable to our small but mighty slice of the opera world!

Rory and his wife Megan are off to new adventures at UMKC. We’ll miss them terribly but wish them all the best and look forward to seeing them again soon!

✨Update regarding our bid for the American Prize with “No Justice, No Peace”✨

Earlier this month I found out that our opera earned an honorable mention with the American Prize. I’m very grateful to be recognized for our work, while at the same time disappointed we didn’t get the win.

Creatives are all familiar with the sting of rejection. We submit our work to hundreds of calls for scores, fellowships, grants, awards, etc. to only win a handful, if that. And it’s hard to not feel like losing that competition or contest represents who you are as a person because of how important our work is to our identity. There’s one thing I always remind myself of when I get that disappointing news.

‼️We created art that moved people, that was thought provoking, that meant so much to all of us who took part in its creation, performance, and experience. That’s why we got into this in the first place. ‼️

One of the responses to our opera that meant the most came from someone who is a strong supporter of the police. He said that seeing the family, the victims of this tragedy on the stage expressing their emotions vulnerably for us to witness made him think differently. It provoked him to think about a perspective he hadn’t considered.

And THAT is why Megan, Ray, and I wanted to create “No Justice, No Peace”. So that we could help build much needed empathy for the victims of police violence.

So sure, we didn’t get “the win”, but art is about so much more than prizes and high fives. It’s about taking snapshots of the human experience and sharing it with the world in hopes that we will all become better for it.

Congrats to the winners for the experiences they created and the lives they impacted! And hats off to everyone who keeps creating! 🍾
