Meet Zhoni, Normally, for writings like this, I ask a series of questions and interview our dance community members. However this is a surprise for her—just as it may be for all of you. I want to tell you about my friend: she is a kind individual, and before anything else, she is an artist. She paints, and she also uses her body as a canvas, with modifications that are emblematic of her uniqueness, even with skin-to-ink versions of some of her own artwork. Anyone who has been to her home can catch a glimpse inside her mind through the shape and feel of her living space. She is a firm believer in cognitive embodiment. Her space contains relics—numerous sketchbooks and journals filled to the brim with the thoughts that were running through her head at one point. She has musical soul, and surrounds herself with instruments and truthfully cares less about own a television. To talk about her dancing, I don’t know if there’s anybody else like her. The Reality you is can teach anybody how to dance, but you can’t teach everybody how to love dancing. She has a gentle, inquisitive demeanor and is perhaps one of the easiest people to love. Her sense of humor is lovely and eclectic, and there is not a world I would want to live in that doesn’t have her in it. I met her at a social dancing spot we call The Deuce. She was adorned in a unique outfit and carried a camcorder—an archaic tool from our adolescent years. I approached her and struck up a conversation. How it started, neither of us can recall, but for whatever reason, it led to a deep discussion about linguistics as everyone around us danced the night away. Months have passed—so many that I’ve lost count—but we are still friends, bound by a deep connection and a soul tie akin to a covalent bond. She has become an extension of me, and I’m sad that she’s moving. Yet I’m happy to see her grow, and the friendship we’ve built is something that will outlast our physical presence. She has become one of my forevers.

I’m excited to see this space grow alongside the Latin dance scene and want to give a shoutout to its founder, Mr. Mike Funk.

Meet Ashly Romero—a person who strives to leave a positive impact on everyone she meets. She wants people to feel that her presence in their life, in whatever capacity, has been a good thing. Ashly loves sharing experiences with others and makes it a priority to enjoy life to the fullest. She believes in finding joy in the journey rather than getting too caught up in the destination. Though she knows she’s not perfect, Ashly holds herself accountable for her words and actions and always aims to do her best to help those she interacts with. But alas, she’s also a dancer. The moment music comes on—any time, anywhere—she instinctively stops whatever she’s doing as her shoulders begin to move. It’s something she can’t help. She describes it as almost blacking out, completely giving in to the feeling of the music, as if it’s a part of who she is. And no, there is no typo here. Her name is Ashly, without an “e.”!

Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to be the perfect dancer, we forget that we do this to enjoy our lives and have fun.
