In 2022 I made a photo book with the intention of having critical conversations about Asian American identity and masculinity, from a nuanced perspective, embracing the complexities of people speaking on being mixed race and transracial adoptees. At the time I could see the excitment of Asian American representation in media, after years of yellowface, limited, problematic characters, and outright erasure. However, the momentum quickly moved into similar trends of fetishization, colorism centering East Asian stories, and other concerning tropes.

Four years later my feed is filled with wasian content, a word placing white supremacy in front of countless identities and narratives, excluding mixed identities outside of a false binary. In 2026 we continue to retreat intellectually. What does white asian even mean? I proudly share that I am Chinese and Polish, as someone who celebrates both cultures in my life. I challenge those hyping Hudson Williams, Eileen Gu, and Alyssa Liu, who are all brilliant, to have deeper conversations, and to open up the affirmation beyond this limiting perspective. Challenge what you are actually celebrating and who you are leaving out of what could be opportunities to build across communities.

I’m absolutely open to all the smoke. Let’s talk about it.

It would be really, really hard to imagine the Twin Cities without a place like @pfunctionary. Public Functionary is where I’ve met some of my closest friends and collaborators. It was one of the first places where I felt truly seen as a young artist. It is the place where my practice evolved from emerging, and the place where came into myself as an arts leader. I met my husband at Public Functionary. I’ve laughed and cried and worked into the wee hours in the morning at Public Functionary. I’ve dreamed big dreams here and supported so many others in exploring & achieving their dreams here at Public Functionary. Public Functionary is an incubator, an activator, a connector.

💞We are hoping to raise $30,000 for Public Functionary before Dec 1. Our fundraising campaign is linked in my bio ⬆️ and we are participating in Give to the Max Day too.

2025 has been hard for so many of us, and Public Functionary is feeling a similar squeeze. Our current funding gap is challenging our ability to close out the year stable and ready for what comes next. We’ve always been scrappy & resourceful, but we also know when it’s time to ask for help. We are asking for your help to raise 30K, and no donation is too big or too small.

Where there’s no space — you have to create it. And that’s what PF Studios was for me. Creatives After Curfew also started & grew with the support of Public Functionary. ConFluence, the nerdy BIPOC sci-fi convention we just held wouldn’t even be possible without Public Functionary’s space, team, and care. That’s countless lives and hundreds of creatives touched by Public Functionary’s work, in just those 3 spaces created. Others will have other stories to share 🖤

@pfunctionary, thank you. And to everyone who has supported us and attended our events and volunteered and donated and bought some art, thank you. I hope you continue to support us in the months and years to come. Nothing this magical happens alone and through showing up we all affirm that spaces like Public Functionary are worth protecting.
