my favorite part of the summer tour was going out every night to sing with @train and getting to fuck with pat.

i felt like if i could get bear, alyson, tim & captain to laugh before i went on (i walked on from their side of the stage), i was doing something right.

it started with a stick horse and a cowboy hat (we played “wanted dead or alive”) and ended with the entire band changing, mid-song, into t-shirts riann and i had made with an outline of pat / my face pressed together... the reveal of that one was exceptional (captured in the last video) ...thanks to @mattmusty, @hectorhelium, @butchwalker & @djsoffrock for pulling it off!

pro-tip i learned: don’t try to sing with a half eaten chili dog in your mouth.

big love to the 2 women who gave me the t-shirts (the love story one & the one w/pat’s face all over it!) and to the woman in the front row who agreed to let me borrow her giant, weird, cut-out pat mask.

Anyone who tours for a living knows that when you have a tour like the one we all were lucky enough to experience this summer, it feels like lightning striking. ⚡️

I’ve been sitting here all week at a loss for words on how to even begin to describe this summer with @train. If you were there, you know it was truly once in a lifetime and special.

Every person welcomed me in with such kindness, empathy, and joy; it felt like a microcosm of what I have always hoped touring could feel like, & I feel that ethos carried us all through even the hardest days. It’s rare I leave a tour feeling like I could have the energy to do 8 weeks all over again, but I truly wish I could do 8 more weeks with these people.♥️

I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud of a body of work from a tour.

I feel the need to thank everyone as best I can. To everyone in all the bands & crew, I appreciate all of you so much and thank each & every one of you for the best of times.

@train (@patmonahan) Thank you for the dry jokes, going along with all the wild creative ideas I threw at you, but most of all for sincerely making me feel very welcomed.

@butchwalker thank you for being the first person to make me feel included, from the first day of rehearsal. Thanks for always having a kind word to say, and being a beacon every day with a smile and a hug.

@mattmusty it was such a joy getting to know you and spend time together. Thanks for always being down for the bit, letting me call you brother in a Hulk Hogan voice, & wanting to get sushi on the off days. Your empathy & kindness reflects on exactly who you are, and influenced all of us to be better versions of ourselves.

@hectorhelium one of the funniest people I’ve ever met, coupled with sincere talent and drive. So glad to have hung out & also thanks for all the laughs, handshakes, & split desserts at catering

@djsoffrock Jerry, it was great not only laughing with you but also getting to know you. Thank you for welcoming me, being invested in the portraits we took every day, & for all the creative ideas and conversations we had.

I’ve stalled as long as I can. @train could not have put together a more perfect collision of humans for my first tour. Though I have no real reference, I know it was incredibly special and I feel like I won the lottery. The people make the place and in so many ways these people went out of their way to create a space that felt like love.

Pat and the band - endless talent, drive, fun. Especially @mattmusty who from day 1 welcomed me and took time to make me feel like I’d known him far longer than this summer. @hectorhelium who has a special talent of making me laugh and chat no matter how bad I am at small talk. I looked forward to seeing you every day.

@riiiiii_ann who was the best living sign post every day when I showed up seeming lost at another venue, such a small but important comfort. @sydneykstein for being a boss bitch and showing me how it’s done. Way to conquer half-dome when it was all I could do to be upright. You both were 2 of the best co-conspirators matt could’ve asked for…

Last but not even close to least, @maggielndnphoto who is endlessly talented but not afraid to lift those up around her. Without your guidance and positivity, I may have quit shooting early on. You cured my imposter syndrome. I can’t wait to see what you do next, powerful queen.

To anyone I forgot, I am overwhelmed and you live in my ♡.

i’m gonna let you all in on a secret about me…

i irish goodbye every tour.

on the last day, as i’m bumping into people packing up, i tell them i’ll find them before i leave and never do…

i’m not wild about endings. i’d rather just skip ‘em and see people again when (or if) i do… and pick up again like nothing’s different.

i texted my band this morning to tell them how amazing i thought they were. and how everything on stage felt effortless. and how fortunate i felt to have them by my side. a very successful chemistry experiment. @bettygoo, @adampopick, @topherdrum for the win.

same with my crew: @paul_ed_win, otto, @losgarpa & @joshphiffer and of course, @ninaereid and sweet @tkurzphotos

i texted with monahan after the last show…i’ve been sharing stages with him for almost 30 years and he’s ALWAYS shown up for me. ALWAYS made room. he’s the rarest of people. a combination of ferociously hard working AND inclusive. and no bullshit. one of one. his friendship is a gift.

and this incarnation of @train (and their crew & @rockmonahan ) is the best yet. just an incredible, top notch bunch of humans…who fucking KILLED IT EVERY NIGHT. better than the records!

and it was such a pleasure to get to know @barenakedladiesmusic . my favorite conversations on this run were with those guys. hilarious, thoughtful and kind. go canada!

and then there’s all of you, who came out… to the shows, to the pre-games, to the signings after my set… and spent your hard earned time (and money) on this music.

i’ve busted my ass my whole career… but i’m also aware of how insanely lucky i am: to still be doing this 13(??) records in, to still have passionate people who come to see me, to have new stages to play on and new people to convert…

i’ll never get to do what i did this summer again. not with this group of humans. time moves ever forward. and that makes the good feelings even more acute. it was a magical way to spend the summer. and i appreciate you all to the moon and back.

Train - What If We Try? Full Version - Live in Sydney, 24 May 2025

Fifteen months ago on stage in Sydney, Pat Monahan introduced new Train song 'What If We Try?' that hadn't been played live anywhere before the Australian shows. It followed some high-energy numbers - 'Save Me San Francisco' and an awesome cover of Gotye's 'Somebody I Used To Know' - but something about the introduction of this new song dropped the arena into attentive hush.

From the first guitar strum, I had a feeling I was going to really like it. Some of my favourite Train songs are where Pat's vocals and lyrics are front and centre - this felt like one of those. What I didn't expect was how the song would build and grow, crescendo, then equally as magically drop back down to guitar strums, then end. Actual goosebumps. SO good!

I recorded the whole song that night and only posted a short clip at the time. The unreleased song wasn't mine to share, and I assumed soon enough the rest of the world would hear it as Train went on tour to Europe and beyond. But the song didn't make many (or any) other appearances that I know of... so for over a year, I feel like I've been holding onto a secret little hidden gem!

Now finally (finally Train, you BIG teases) August 2026, the new album 'Mad Dog In The Fog' is out (woohoo!) so I can share this video in full, for Train fans old and new. [Hopefully insta won't block the audio]

'What If We Try?' on the album sounds so close to the live version - almost exactly as I remember (...and have watched about six hundred times on my phone.) I think it would be a perfect album final track, but I'm no expert. Strong contender for my favourite on the record, though it did have a fifteen month headstart...

"We can get high on the way to Sydney while we listen to the rain on the roof of my car"

This song will always take me right back to that amazing Sydney 2025 concert, the day the sun came out after so much rain. Another reason to love it even more.
