Etienne De Crécy - Super Discount LP

Released: 1997
Label: Pixadelic
Pressing: 2022 French Reissue

https://www.discogs.com/release/25287508-Etienne-De-Crécy-Super-Discount

This is the debut album from French producer Etienne De Crécy. Other acts are involved but he is the glue that binds them all together.

I can’t quite recall where I first heard it but Prix Choc was my gateway to Etienne. The “sinsemilla…marijuana” refrain instantly made your ears prick up and you didn’t forget it. I bought the 12” but for some reason never got around to buying the whole album on vinyl. The prices to buy it were pretty hefty but thankfully a couple of years ago the whole series (there are three Super Discount albums) was rereleased.

Many luminaries of the French electronic scene are present here, it’s very much a collaborative album with Etienne at the helm. A pre-fame Air make an appearance with what sounds like a massive precursor to All I Need, as does Alex Gopher, DJ Tall and the late DJ Medhi amongst others.

Much like Cassius you can hear the hip hop and dubbier influences very strongly in the mid 90s releases, a fairly unique blend that the French perfected around this time. Not that nobody had fused hip hop and house before, but it was mostly house beats with rapping. This was more the bass, tempo, beats etc. There’s plenty jazz and house going on too.

A great album and probably due to his lack of DJing and touring, EDC is an often overlooked part of the French house scene. I did have tickets to go and see his Cube show around maybe 2009, in the aftermath of Daft Punk’s pyramid show, but it never happened. I can’t quite recall why the tour, or at least the U.K. tour, didn’t take place. But it would have been brilliant to see.
