We are still riding the wave from the 11th Annual Our Ocean Conference! 🌊

As we travel home, we’re feeling energized and inspired by the conversations, collaborations, and connections made throughout the week. BIMS is more committed than ever to amplifying diverse voices in ocean science, conservation, and stewardship.

It was incredible to connect with members, partners, and ocean advocates from around the world. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their stories, and helped strengthen this growing community.

How it started ➡️ How it’s going 💫

Happy 5th birthday to @miss_elasmo , our passion project that we grew into a global nonprofit organization 🌎

We chose #juneteenth as the day to launch because we wanted to make a statement: we are here and we WILL take up space by creating our own table ✊🏾

Reflecting on these 5 years I’m so grateful for the friendships I’ve made, the people who’s dreams we helped achieve, and the progress I’ve made as a person and scientist 🦈

Cheers to 5 years and many many more 🥂

We traveled from Georgia to North Carolina this Mother’s Day weekend to celebrate our niece, D’karia, graduating from THE North Carolina A&T—the HBCU in Greensboro!

From day one, she’s been a little fish with big dreams, and now she’s living them out—traveling the world, speaking at the United Nations, diving into ocean research, and preparing for a paid year-long research trip in Panama.

We had the house decorated to the tee to let her know—we stand with you, we believe in you, and we’re so proud of you. Seeing her shine as a Black woman in marine science, a field that doesn’t often look like us, is inspiring on every level.

And can we talk about that graduation?! Black excellence EVERYWHERE. NCAT is leading the nation in producing Black engineers, and the energy was unmatched.

We love you Dakaria! Keep swimming, baby. Just keep swimming.

🌊 Citizens of the Ocean 🐋

An incredible week in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France attending the Citizens of the Ocean World Youth Forum at @planetenausicaa

As coordinator for the North American Delegation I put together a series of workshops leading up to this experience to prepare ECOPS from across North America for this opportunity and equip them with knowledge of the ocean decade challenges. Throughout the week I helped facilitate in-person communication workshops and acted as a speaker.

Excited to see what all these young people accomplish and looking forward to continuing to work with our selected delegation as we prepare them for UNOC3. Couldn’t be more grateful to @motemarinelab for serving as the host institution for the North American delegation and for their support of my travel to such a momentous and important convening 💙

i'm so incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to spend last week working with the most incredible people in the most beautiful place. i cannot even put into words how amazing it was to meet, converse with, collaborate with, and truly even to simply be in the presence of you all. i will be forever grateful for the chance to have met some of the intelligent minds behind the future of ocean conservation, and i will cherish every moment i have spent with these extraordinary people forever.

What an incredible week with such incredible people! Currently too tired for any reflection further than how grateful I am for this opportunity and how wonderful it was to meet so many lovely people with such diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Extra shoutout to my fellow Aotearoa delegates and our wonderful support, truly wouldn't have been the same without you all.
