✨️Indie tbr progress update✨️

At the start of the year, I chose around 30 indie books to read for the year. I've made progress on some of that list, but as expected, the tbr grew bigger than I could manage.

Here are my 2026 reads/purchases/gifts.. with some 72 books on the list.

❓️Does our tbr/bookshelf seem similar?

I read two indie series this year, and they have both become some of my all-time favourite series! ❤️

Of course, I’m talking about The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by @bethbrower and The Bound and the Broken by @ryancahillauthor ! (They both are getting traditionally published 👏)

Naturally, this got me looking for more indie books, and I’ve been finding so many interesting stories that I can’t wait to read! I’ve also been fortunate enough to have some of these authors reach out to me, which has been lovely. 🥹

So I thought I’d share some of these discoveries with you all!

Here’s Part 1 of the indie books I’ve recently added to my TBR! 📚✨

–x–

Are any of these books on your radar? Have you read any of them?

☆☆☆☆ Ember and Steel by Donna Morgan ( @dkmorgan_writes )

This one surprised me in the best way. At first, Ember and Steel felt like a fairly familiar fantasy setup, but the further I got, the more I appreciated what Donna Morgan was doing with it.

Sarah is definitely the star of the show. She's not an instantly powerful heroine who can suddenly do everything. She struggles, makes mistakes, learns and grows, which makes her journey feel much more believable.

And then there's the found family. Gwith, Caz, and Taran quickly became some of my favourite parts of the story, with Gwith especially standing out. I really enjoyed watching his stoic exterior slowly crack and seeing his relationship with Sarah develop.

The world also has plenty of going for it. Druids, elves, dire wolves, magical creatures, dark lore, and a mysterious force lurking beneath everything gave the story a great atmosphere. I particularly liked the way the Church of the New Dawn explores how fear and prejudice towards magic can be turned into a tool of control.

I did feel that some of the side characters could have had a little more depth, and the romance felt slightly rushed in the second half. I would have happily spent more time watching those relationships develop.

Still, this was a really enjoyable read with a refreshing protagonist, plenty of darker fantasy elements, and a world that clearly has much more to reveal.

Thank you so much to Donna Morgan and https://bookmatch.co.uk/ for the review copy. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to see where Sarah’s story goes next!

Tell me your favourite found-family group from a fantasy book. I need recommendations!

My latest reads. Really hit a slump in September, but Lancelot & The Ashen Viper are ABSOLUTELY bringing me out the other side.

Go vote & *maybe* I will stop being so unhinged. ( prob not though )

I was seeing a lot of comments in the thread potentially missing some aspects of the rules, so possibly being in danger of not having their votes count.

Figured I would break down my understanding of the rules, but you definitely don't have to listen to me. Just trying to help whoever I send over there to enter their votes properly!

You can vote for up* to 10 or less than 10!

If I'm wrong about anything, let us all know!

This was so hard to choose, and don't pay too much attenion to the ordering of it because I'm moody & can't decide. These my top faves though. 🥰

Also indie/small publishers don't count for this. Again just read their rules. Also if they got picked up by trad they are not indie anymore. So The Price of Fear & Cello's Gate do not count!

✨Ember and Steel✨

Author: @dkmorgan_writes
Available on KU / Audible / Hardcover / Paperback
Audiobook narrator: Diana Croft

I received an ALC of this book from the author (Thank you so so so much!!). Halfways through the ALC, I bought a copy of the eBook because I just have to have it.

This is a dark fantasy, plot driven, action packed story of Sarah. She witnessed her best friend’s death. She had to run.

The audiobook narrator has delivered the story so well. The tone and the pitch triggered feelings (I think this is the best way I can describe it). I could feel, taste, hear, smell, feel what was being narrated. With the story being descriptive, the narrator brought me into the story. I listened to it at 1.3-1.7 speed, slowing down on some parts so I can catch up to the world building, especially with some names I probably wouldn’t know how to spell without the ebook.

My favorite person in the book is Caz. He is care free, and his character was written so fun. I love his humor, and he is such a fun side character, and I would definitely want to dance with him at a party (and shenanigan-y things).

Last: Two stellar books! One I can’t say too much about except that you should read the first book in preparation for it! (Copper Skin, Oaken Lungs)

Current: Admittedly not very far into the second two, but enjoying all of them!

Next: Two ARCs I’m excited to dive in to!
