This was one of those New York sports moments that people talk about for the rest of their lives. Right after Larry Johnson hit that legendary three-pointer and got fouled to complete the four-point play, Madison Square Garden completely lost its mind. Reggie Miller looked absolutely stunned. For a split second the entire building froze in disbelief, and then it erupted. I was sitting up in the 200’s with Steven Scher, and I can still feel the arena shaking beneath us. Back then, those seats were probably around a hundred bucks each — which now feels impossible to even imagine for a game of that magnitude. But in that moment, none of that mattered. The Garden became one giant explosion of noise, emotion, and chaos. Total strangers were hugging, screaming, jumping on seats. It felt like the roof was going to come off the building.

What made it even more special was who I shared it with. Sports memories are incredible, but the people you experience them with are what make them unforgettable. Out of all the games, restaurants, meetings, and moments life gives you, there are only a handful where every detail stays crystal clear forever. That night with Scher is one of them for me. The energy, the tension, the hatred between the Knicks and Pacers, the electricity of playoff basketball in New York City — there was nothing like it. It wasn’t just a basketball game. It was one of the greatest live sporting events I’ve ever witnessed in my life, and one of those moments that reminds you why New York sports fans are built differently.
