POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Did you know I and a bunch of my friends (who happen to all be my former CCY and/or Wesleyan students) have an album dropping in two weeks? And did you know that it being Bandcamp Friday means it’s a particularly opportune time to (follow the link in bio and) preorder your digital copy?

“Independent Declarations” is a reflection on the Declaration of Independence and its present-moment relevance on the occasion of its 250th anniversary. Resonant Motion commissioned nine artists to compose works starting from that framework, which were then interpreted by other musicians. The shared responsibility therein (where the performers had to interpret preexisting “documents” and the creators of those documents handed over the duty of bringing them to fruition) is a representation of democracy in action, while my own collaborations with these former students represents the inter-generational torch-passing needed for principles and their corresponding guidelines to endure and evolve.

And I think the music is pretty darned cool too.

Compositions by Chad Selph, Sam Friedman, David Hanlon, Rachel Housle, Sean Clapis, Kwaku Darko, Johnnie Gilmore, Anne Boccato, and Joe Newman

Performed by NB, Erica Tracy, Alex Tripp, Spencer Hattendorf, Tim Norton, Nate Mondschein, and Jocelyn Pleasant.

Recorded this July by Paulie Philippone at Ghost Hit Recording and Greg DiCrosta at Firehouse 12 Studios.

Mixed and mastered by Elena Kwassman, SquarEast Studio, Brooklyn, NY

Cover design by Dave Kopperman

This project was made possible by a Semiquincentennial grant from the Middletown Commission on the Arts and by the generosity of Resonant Motion’s donors.

My latest RMI Records release “Right Now Volume 4: Visions of Steveland” is now available on Bandcamp and on all the streaming sites. Stevie Wonder has been such a beacon of both truth and peace amidst turbulent times and these tunes represent that whole spectrum.

If you find nourishment in it, have the means, and are so inclined, consider paying it forward by contributing to one of the organizations fighting for our democracy and/or for the safety and dignity of those vulnerable to what is happening. Or you can purchase the album on Bandcamp and all the funds will go to Resonant Motion and be directed to the forthcoming cycle of Claire's Continuum, applications for which are ongoing through this month.

Mixing/Mastering by Joshua Kwassman
Recorded at home by NB on piano, organ, Rhodes, and Wurlitzer

My latest RMI Records release “Right Now Volume 3: Our Search for Peace” is now available on Bandcamp and on all the streaming sites. Thank you for taking a moment to consider listening, thanks all the more if you actually let in some of these sonic reflections on inner and outer peace amidst turbulent times.

If you are a person who finds monetary exchange to be a vital part of consuming music, consider in this case paying it forward by contributing to one of the organizations fighting for the soul of our nation. Or you can purchase it on Bandcamp and all the funds will go to Resonant Motion and be directed to the forthcoming cycle of Claire's Continuum.

Mixing/Mastering by Joshua Kwassman
Recorded at home by NB (with an assist to Sam Gossner via "Joachim's Piano")

“Right Now Volume 2: Songs of Solidarity” is now available on Bandcamp via RMI Records (streaming everywhere in a few weeks). These songs (by Sweet Honey in the Rock, Abbey Lincoln, Johnny Clegg, Patti Smith, Oscar Brown Jr., the Grateful Dead, the Neville Brothers, Donny Hathaway, Woody Guthrie, Billy Taylor, and Jimmy Greene and played on various combinations of piano, organ, and Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric piano) span various genres but are unified by the goal of helping nourish those fighting the good fight in the face of this moment's horror show.

I'm offering the album for free, so if you were considering supporting me/this music in that way (which itself is not necessary), please instead donate to one of the vital nonprofits on which we are now depending (and which are now depending on us) more than ever. If you choose to buy, all proceeds will go to the next edition of Claire's Continuum.

Big thanks to the Resonant Motion team, most especially to Josh Kwassman (mixing and mastering) and Dave Kopperman (cover art and design). See less

It’s here: “Right Now Volume 1: Songs of Conflict and Comfort” is now available on RMI Records, streaming everywhere. These are some of the songs, from various genres, that have helped me cope with the political madness over the last couple months, played on various combinations of piano, organ, and Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric piano. If that sounds like it might be nourishing, then I invite you to give a listen wherever you might be inclined to stream music.

There is no physical media available nor am I selling downloads, so if you were considering supporting me/this music in that way, please instead donate to one of the vital nonprofits on which we are now depending (and which are now depending on us) more than ever. And if you just lend an ear and open your heart, that’s plenty too – the hope that my love for these meaningful and timely old songs and my outpouring of these complicated emotions might help someone else is the purpose here.

Big thanks to the Resonant Motion team, most especially to Josh Kwassman (mixing and mastering) and Dave Kopperman (cover art and design).

Here we go - on the eve of the first round of voting, something for voting members of the Recording Academy to consider. There are so many things in life to consider, of course, like the meaning of existence or how to be a more compassionate human or whether the large-size ice cream cone is really necessary (from my experience last night, perhaps not) - so why not throw my latest album on RMI Records, "Live at the Side Door," album (and the potential of its worthiness of a place on the Grammy® ballot) on the pile?

The odds of a nomination are approximately equal to those of Chick Corea rising from the crypt to anoint me the chosen one, but hey, you never know. And if you are a voting member, I thank you for your consideration on behalf of the wonderful folks who brought this to fruition, including:

Henry Lugo - bass
Otis Brown III - drums

Nick Sexton - recording
Joshua Kwassman - mixing/mastering

Dave Kopperman - design
Kei Scampa - cover photo

lil' ol' me - piano

and thanks to my pal Steve Bulmer for the encouragement and logistical support in submitting this record for the aforementioned consideration.

Available everywhere today on RMI Records: my new album, Live at the Side Door.

Thank you to Henry Lugo and Otis Brown III for swinging their patooties off.

Thank you to Nick Sexton for recording that evening in October of 2022 so expertly and to Chris Beaudry for facilitating the gig. And of course to Ken Kitchings for making the whole Side Door operation thrive to the enormous benefit of the jazz ecosystem, musicians and fans alike.

Thank you to Josh Kwassman for the reliably excellent mixing and mastering.

Thank you to Dave Kopperman for the gorgeous cover design.

Thank you to all those who were there supporting that night. Thank you to all who have supported along the way more broadly - you know it’s not hyperbole to say I’d have quit long ago if not for that, so if you dig the music here give yourself a round of applause too.

And thank you to all who give a listen now.
