Before @academyofdjs, my goal was simple: learn how to mix well enough to put together a YouTube series. I had no idea what I was actually signing up for.
The curriculum didn’t just teach me how to DJ, it forced me out of my comfort zone. 5 months ago, I remember staring at mixer and feeling clueless and thinking everything was complicated. In the beginning we had to talk on the mic in front of the class and also come up with a music video with our small group. Two very uncomfortable tasks for me. Many times I felt like messaging staff I wanted to quit and that this wasn’t for me. My mind tried to convince myself I didn’t need all this extra stuff. When under pressure, my default setting has always been anxiety and self-doubt. In the beginning, I genuinely felt like I sucked.
But I kept going. I realized that while I might not pick things up as fast as the next person, I could out-rep my own insecurities. Every single week was a new challenge, but after every week, the hours I put in showed up in my earphones and speakers.
Something shifted along the way. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been great at hyping everyone else up while quietly being pessimistic towards myself when it came to learning new skills.
I’ve spent my life looking up at people who command a room. My dad for example, a singer who could step in front of a crowd and just shine like it was the most natural thing in the world. I used to think that was a trait you were just born with. I’m still not completely over the fear of the spotlight, and my nerves still show up, but I know one thing now: when it’s my time to step up, I’ma do my thing.
Thank you, @academyofdjs. You didn’t just teach me the technicals, you gave me a version of myself I always day dreamed in my mind that I feared I could never be.

AND for any of the haters in the crowd that said any of us had pre-recorded sets! WHAT a compliment in disguise! Seriously. The work we put in really showed up at grad!

5 months ago, we sat across from these individuals and interviewed them in their first week in Season 18.

Nervous faces. Big dreams. No idea what the next five months would ask of them.

Since then, we’ve watched them struggle, grow, stress, sacrifice, create, perform, and become people we’re genuinely proud of.

Tonight, they earned the stage.

Season 18 — this is your moment. 🖤
