ARC Review ๐Ÿ“– flames of darkness by d.l. hurst
publication date: september 22, 2026

iโ€™ve been waiting for this one since may, so finally getting the chance to read it as an arc honestly made me so excited!!!

synopsis:
flames of darkness follows a man who appears completely ordinary on the surface, but is hiding a much darker side. his fascination with fire, control and death has been part of his life for years, and he has perfected the art of keeping that side of himself hidden.
at the same time, detective kat walker is looking into a growing number of missing women. the cases seem unrelated at first, but kat starts noticing patterns that make her believe there is something much bigger hiding underneath them. as kat gets closer to the truth, the carefully controlled life he has built begins to come under pressure, and the line between his public identity and the darkness he keeps hidden starts to blur.
what follows is a dark psychological thriller exploring trauma, control, obsession, manipulation and the consequences of living a double life.

my thoughts:
this was such an interesting read because we know very early on who weโ€™re dealing with, so the suspense comes from watching everything unfold and wondering how long he can keep his carefully constructed life together.
i really enjoyed katโ€™s investigation. i liked that she didnโ€™t immediately have all the answers and instead slowly worked through old cases, inconsistencies and patterns. her determination to keep looking when other people had already moved on from certain cases was one of my favourite parts.
the book also does a good job of showing how someoneโ€™s past can shape them without trying to excuse their actions. the fire imagery throughout the story was another detail i really liked because it feels connected to both the character and the atmosphere of the book.
thank you to d.l. hurst for the arc. i enjoyed it thoroughly!
