Chopping it up with King Sting! @OriginalDJDlux On the topic of how we evolved from producing Breakbeat #Hardcore & #Jungle before branching out into the #UKGarage Taking @DejavuFm to the world and stumbled into a musical culture that would go onto take the world by storm, before the term #UKGrime was ever used. For many, this was a very common thing within our local area & circles. I have always felt, one of the biggest influences on new forms comes from people with the ability to create their own unique sound, when doors are closed. I recall many youngsters trying to break out, not being allowed into certain scenes. #ukgarage

What an amazing experience, I am so proud to have been able to showcase just some of our history and heritage. Back2Back Takeover of the V&A East Museum. It was so important that the real local community and often forgotten peoples have a mention and get recognition for shaping British culture. Connecting the dots and Creating new memories along the way. People want to hear more about the moments and untold stories.
Particularly exactly how our East London manor played a key role. We talking original @dejavufm Studio install, Telepathy Insight with Sting, @BrainRecords Masterclass, and so much more. We have to big up @RendezvousProject @NiaArchives @UpYaArchives and @V&AEast for sending for us and for all the contributors Chris Hansen, Felt Sound System, the list goes on & on…. Shall we do it again? More to come.. #Arch421.

As we pay heavenly respects to Len on his birthday, we look back to the session last month at our Music Heritage Masterclass, held at @BigPennySocial.

We looked at the legacy of Lennie De Ice and the “DIY” mindset that built the UK Jungle scene,

The biggest takeaway for the young people who took part in this session?

Ownership!

We talked about the ethics of being self-sufficient, owning the means of production, the distribution, culture and the destiny.

Insightful and inspiring.

This is how we turn street culture into a lasting legacy.

Dusting off a heavyweight. It might look like a ‘toy’ to some, but the pulse of the underground was built on gear like this.

This is a handpicked selection of tracks from 1999-2001 that shaped and influenced the sound of grime in the early 2000s. Bear in mind there is only one track from 1999 that is Jammer's "Army" which many will tell you is the first grime track ever made. Later released in 2002, the date of production being 1999 proves the shift in sound occurred at an earlier stage than some may think.

There's a lot more to show for this time period, so I may do a part 2 on this in the near future.

⬇️ Let me know what you think of the selected tracks and what your favourites are in the comments 😈⬇️

Between 1999 and 2001, UK Garage and Dark Garage started shifting from it's traditional sound toward a rougher, DIY sound called grime. This change was driven by the youth who were tired of being flashy and instead used home computers and game consoles to make music that reflected their daily lives in the city. The movement began with raw underground tracks and reached the charts by 2001 through successful groups like So Solid Crew and the Pay As U Go Cartel.

UK garage provided the foundation for grime by establishing pirate radio stations and group structures known as "crews". Artists took these elements and rebuilt them into a faster, more aggressive style, typically set at a 140 BPM tempo. By stripping away the polished, happy vibes of the old garage scene, they created a confrontational sound that reflected the reality of the streets and changed British music culture forever.
